Tyson Foods announced in November 2025 that it would end operations at its beef plant in Lexington, Nebraska. The U.S. Department of Labor says the plant closed on January 20, 2026, with 3,200 workers laid off. Tyson described the move as part of restructuring its beef business; the closure also carries consequences for workers, cattle producers and the local economy.

What happened at the Lexington plant?

On November 21, 2025, Tyson Foods announced that it would end operations at its Lexington beef facility. The company also said it would convert its Amarillo, Texas, beef facility to a single, full-capacity shift. Those were separate actions: the Nebraska plant closure did not mean Tyson was closing all of its Nebraska operations. Tyson’s announcement described the change as a network adjustment to strengthen its beef business.

The U.S. Department of Labor later reported that the Lexington plant closed on January 20, 2026, and that 3,200 workers were laid off. That figure describes layoffs tied to the closure, rather than a current count of Tyson employees in the region. The department’s March 2026 release also announced more than $1.6 million to assist affected workers.

Why did Tyson close it?

Tyson framed the decision as restructuring and right-sizing its beef business. The company’s November 2025 announcement paired the Lexington closure with the Amarillo shift change, but the cited statement does not give a plant-specific financial breakdown explaining why Lexington was selected.

In a separate announcement on August 13, 2026, Tyson described a later network restructuring and named Dakota City, Nebraska; Holcomb, Kansas; and Amarillo, Texas, as the facilities around which it would anchor its beef business. This was a subsequent network plan, not a description of the original Lexington announcement. Tyson’s August 2026 announcement provides the company’s account of that later change.

What did the plant mean for Lexington and cattle producers?

The closure removed a major employer and meat-processing operation from Lexington. In November 2025, the Associated Press reported that the facility employed roughly 3,200 people in a city of about 11,000 and had capacity to slaughter about 5,000 cattle a day. Those are reported employment and capacity figures, not proof of the plant’s actual daily production or a current city employment count. The AP report provides that contemporaneous context.

A University of Nebraska Center for Agricultural Profitability analysis estimated potential economic effects from the closure. Its figures are modeled, not measured post-closure losses: the analysis uses historical cattle, boxed-beef and byproduct prices, historical harvest weights, an assumed 90% utilization rate and 255 harvest days. That distinction matters when interpreting estimates of effects on cattle markets or the wider economy; modeled scenarios are not a record of what Lexington or Nebraska ultimately experienced. Read the university’s analysis and methods.

What support was announced for affected workers?

The Department of Labor said in March 2026 that it awarded more than $1.6 million to assist workers affected by the closure. Nebraska’s labor department also reported expanding services. These announcements establish that assistance and services were made available, but do not show that every laid-off worker received support or what employment outcome any individual achieved. Tyson’s initial announcement said workers could pursue openings at other company facilities. That option should not be read as a guarantee of a transfer: the announcement does not establish that every worker was eligible, accepted a position or relocated.

How the closure differs from later Tyson announcements

  • November 2025: Tyson announced the end of operations at Lexington and a separate move to a single, full-capacity shift at Amarillo.
  • January 20, 2026: The Department of Labor reported that the Lexington plant had closed; it also reported 3,200 layoffs tied to the closure.
  • August 2026: Tyson announced a later restructuring naming Dakota City, Holcomb and Amarillo as anchors for its beef business.

Keeping these dates and locations distinct avoids confusing the Lexington closure with either the Amarillo shift change or the later network plan. The Nebraska governor’s November 2025 statement and the AP’s December 2025 follow-up add contemporaneous state and community context.
