Breakthrough Ventures, founded by Stanford students Roman Scott and Itbaan Nafi, announced a $2 million fundraise on February 2, 2026, to expand its student-founder accelerator beyond Stanford and open it to students nationwide. The program combines potential grant and investment funding with compute credits, legal support, mentorship and a Demo Day; those benefits are not all cash, and some are conditional.
What Breakthrough Ventures announced
The fundraise is intended to take Breakthrough beyond its Stanford roots and support a nationwide student-founder cohort. The company named Mayfield, J.P. Morgan, Collide Capital, Gunderson Dettmer and Silicon Valley Bank among the organizations associated with the expansion. Its announcement does not establish how much of the $2 million has since been deployed.
TechCrunch reported at launch that the founders planned to deploy the fund over three years and incubate at least 100 companies. These were forward-looking targets reported on February 2, 2026, not completed results. The founders’ Stanford Demo Day activity began in 2024, according to the same report.
What participating founders may receive
Breakthrough’s official overview describes a mix of financial support and services. The distinction matters: grants are non-dilutive, an investment may involve different terms, and compute credits are not cash a founder can use for general expenses.

- If you want to build a better future, you must believe in secrets.
- The great secret of our time is that there are still uncharted frontiers to explore and new inventions to create. In Zero to One, legendary entrepreneur and investor Peter Thiel shows how we can find singular ways to create those new things.
- Grant funding: up to $10,000 in non-dilutive grants. “Up to” is a maximum, not a guaranteed award for every team.
- Potential investment: an opportunity to unlock an additional $50,000 investment. The wording describes a conditional opportunity, not a universal or automatic investment.
- Compute credits: up to $350,000 in credits per team, with Amazon, Microsoft and NVIDIA named as providers. Credits are for computing resources rather than unrestricted cash.
- Other support: legal counsel, mentorship and a Demo Day before investors.
The announcement describes a hybrid format, with in-person meetups at venture firms and a culminating Demo Day at Stanford, as reported by TechCrunch. It does not establish that every interaction or program activity takes place in person.
What the reported outcomes do—and do not—show
Breakthrough said it had supported 40 founders in raising more than $60 million in venture capital since the accelerator launched. That is the company’s own historical figure, not an independently audited outcome measure. It should not be confused with the $2 million fundraise, which is capital announced for the accelerator’s expansion.

The 100-company goal and three-year deployment plan describe the founders’ intentions at launch. The available reporting does not establish progress against those targets or later outcomes for companies in the program. That absence of figures does not show that no progress has occurred.
How to check whether applications are open
The February 2, 2026 announcement said applications for the 2026 Demo Day were open at that time. That launch-time status is not confirmation that applications remain open, and the reviewed sources do not establish current deadlines or eligibility criteria. Check Breakthrough Ventures’ official website and its live application information for the current cohort details.

What student founders should clarify before applying
Because the published benefit descriptions do not establish individualized award amounts or complete terms, prospective applicants should confirm the current application requirements and what support is available to their specific team. In particular, distinguish grant funding from a possible investment, and ask how compute credits can be used and when they expire or become available if those details affect the startup’s plans.
