Twitter’s large blue-bird sign returned to auction in 2025 with an estimate of $40,000 or more, but it did not sell for $40,000: RR Auction reports a final price of $34,375 including the buyer’s premium. The lot was the physical sign formerly mounted outside Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters—not ownership of the bird logo itself.
What the auction estimate and sale price mean
RR Auction estimated the sign at $40,000 or more. The auction house’s lot page and March 25, 2025 recap report that it sold for $34,375 including the buyer’s premium. The estimate was a valuation attached to the lot, not the amount the buyer paid. RR Auction’s lot listing and its March 2025 recap give the estimate and result.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported a $21,664 bid on March 17, while the auction was still in progress. That was a dated snapshot of live bidding, not the final result. The Associated Press also reported the $34,375 sale and said the buyer was not named.
What the buyer acquired
The lot was an official Twitter bird-logo fascia sign that had been displayed on the exterior of the company’s San Francisco headquarters. RR Auction says the sign faced Jessie Street; a second bird sign on the building faced 10th Street. The auction house says this sign was acquired in Twitter’s September 2023 rebranding auction before returning to auction in 2025.

RR Auction describes the bird as nicknamed “Larry” after Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird. The sale was for this physical sign, not the trademark, logo rights, or ownership of Twitter’s former brand identity.
Size, weight and removal logistics
RR Auction’s 2025 lot description gives approximate dimensions of 145 × 105 × 20 inches and an approximate weight of 560 pounds. Its recap rounds the sign’s face to 12 by 9 feet. These are auction-house measurements, and they help explain why delivery was a significant practical issue rather than an ordinary parcel shipment.

The buyer was responsible for arranging and paying to ship the sign from storage in San Francisco. That obligation can affect the real cost and practicality of acquiring an oversized lot; the reported $34,375 sale price is stated with the buyer’s premium, not a quoted all-in cost including transport.
Why the bird mattered to Twitter
Twitter announced its simplified bird mark on June 6, 2012. In the company’s announcement, Creative Director Doug Bowman wrote: “From now on, this bird will be the universally recognizable symbol of Twitter.” The company later transitioned to X in 2023, and RR Auction’s listing describes the logo as retired from the company’s branding.

The sign’s history gives the object its connection to the former headquarters and brand, but it does not change what was sold: a large piece of exterior signage with a documented association to Twitter.
What is known about the buyer
The Associated Press reported that the buyer was not identified. Neither the cited sale reporting nor the auction listing establishes where the sign is now, so its current owner and location should not be assumed.

How to read the result against other collectible sales
For a useful comparison, look beyond a headline estimate. Check the realized price and whether it includes the buyer’s premium, the item’s provenance and condition, its size, and any shipping or removal obligations. A mid-auction bid is not comparable to a completed sale unless the auction has closed and the figures are labeled accordingly.
