U.S. farm tractor sales fell 14.8% year over year in December 2025: 14,581 tractors were sold, compared with 17,104 in December 2024. For the full calendar year, sales declined 9.9% to 195,857 from 217,279 in 2024. Those are separate comparisons—one month and one full year—and both figures count units, not revenue.
What the December decline measures
The figures come from the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM), which reported preliminary monthly retail sales submitted by member companies through its proprietary statistical reporting programs. They are not a census of every equipment transaction or final audited totals. The report was released January 13, 2026. AEM’s December 2025 U.S. report provides the underlying counts.
A year-over-year decline in units sold does not, by itself, show whether equipment revenue, prices, dealer inventory, or farmers’ total spending rose or fell. The sales count should also not be confused with beginning inventory, which AEM reports separately.
U.S. tractor sales by category
The December comparison shows the sharpest percentage decline among 4WD tractors; 2WD tractors in the 40–100 hp category had the smallest. The full-year figures show a similar pattern, with 4WD sales down most among the listed categories.

Each monthly percentage compares December 2025 with December 2024; each full-year percentage compares calendar 2025 with calendar 2024. The categories have very different sales volumes, so percentage changes are more useful than comparing their raw unit counts as though the segments were equal in size. Figures are from AEM’s U.S. report.
Combine sales also fell, especially over the full year
AEM counted 422 U.S. self-propelled combines sold in December 2025, down 4.3% from 441 in December 2024. For calendar 2025, the total was 3,579, down 35.6% from 5,556 in 2024. The monthly and annual changes are distinct periods, just as they are for tractors.

What AEM says about the downturn
Curt Blades, AEM’s senior vice president, attributed the results in part to pressure on farmers, saying: “December’s data is a result of the economic instability and pressures farmers have faced the past months,” AEM’s January 14, 2026 release also reports that Canadian tractor sales fell 13.7% and Canadian combine sales rose 26.1% in December year over year. Those Canadian figures describe a separate market and are not included in the U.S. totals.
The sales report supplies counts and AEM’s interpretation, but does not quantify how much prices, farm income, interest rates, inventory, or any other factor contributed to the declines. The figures therefore establish the direction and scale of reported sales—not a proven cause or a forecast for future demand.
