Top CD Rates on March 14, 2025: Best Listed APY Was 4.65%, Not 5%

The top listed CD offers on March 14, 2025 were 4.65% APY for six or seven months. That historical snapshot does not support a 5% guarantee through September 2026.

The highest listed CD rates in the March 14, 2025 roundup were 4.65% APY—not 5%. The two highlighted offers ran for six or seven months, so they did not guarantee that rate through September 2026. This is a historical snapshot, not a ranking of rates available today.

What were the top CD rates on March 14, 2025?

The Motley Fool’s roundup for March 14, 2025 reported top listed rates of about 4.50% to 4.65% APY, depending on term. Its highest listed offers were:

Bank APY Term Minimum deposit
OMB 4.65% Seven months $1,000
DR Bank 4.65% Six months $500

The roundup said its rate data came from issuing banks. CNET’s March 14, 2025 roundup, syndicated by Yahoo Finance, also reported a top rate of 4.65% APY. These are dated secondary comparisons, not proof that either offer remains open. The Motley Fool’s March 14 roundup and CNET’s March 14 roundup provide the historical context.

Could a CD guarantee a 5% return through September 2026?

The March 14, 2025 comparison does not support that claim. Its highest listed APY was 4.65%, and its highlighted terms ended after six or seven months—not in September 2026. A CD generally fixes its stated rate for the product’s contracted term, but that is not the same as a universal promise of a 5% return over a specified multi-year period. The rate, term, eligibility, and issuer disclosures all matter.

APY is an annualized yield figure; the interest earned over a shorter CD term is not the same as receiving that APY for a full year. Nor does a short-term CD establish what rate would apply if the funds were reinvested at maturity.

How to evaluate a CD offer before opening it

Do not rely on an old roundup as an application-ready offer. Confirm the following in the issuer’s current disclosures and account agreement:

  • APY and effective date: Check the exact APY and when it applies. Rates can change, so an old published number may no longer be available.
  • Term and maturity date: Confirm how long the deposit is committed and when it matures.
  • Minimum deposit: Verify the amount needed to open the specific CD.
  • Early-withdrawal penalty: Find out what you could forfeit if you need the money before maturity. The historical roundup does not establish the penalty for each offer.
  • Renewal and grace-period rules: Check what happens at maturity, including whether the CD renews automatically and how long you have to withdraw or change the instructions.
  • Eligibility and access: Confirm who can open the account and whether it is available where you live.
  • Deposit insurance: Verify the institution’s coverage and how the applicable ownership category affects your insured deposits.

Why rate dates and sources matter

CD rates are time-sensitive. The FDIC publishes national deposit-rate averages and rate caps monthly, using information available as of the last business day of the preceding month. Those figures provide regulatory and market context; they are not a list of the best consumer offers. See the FDIC’s national rates and rate caps for its publication schedule and data.

Issuer pages have their own dates as well. For example, the Central Bank page surfaced rates effective September 9–15, 2026, while Navy Federal’s page showed rates as of September 10, 2026 ET. Those are institution-specific snapshots, not a comprehensive ranking of U.S. CD offers. Check the issuer directly for the rate and terms available when you apply: Central Bank CDs and Navy Federal certificates.

Are these the best CD rates available now?

No current nationwide ranking can be established from these dated examples. The March 14, 2025 roundups describe offers reported on that date; the later issuer pages show only those institutions’ dated rates. For a current decision, compare live issuer disclosures and label every rate by its as-of date rather than treating a historical maximum as available now.
