That is a published estimate from a celebrity finance site, not a figure Skerritt has confirmed, and it is not backed by a public balance sheet, tax filing, or audited statement. The estimate can be useful as a rough marker of public interest in his career, but it should not be read as a verified account of what he owns or earns.
Where the $12 million figure comes from
Celebrity Net Worth, a site that publishes estimates for public figures, puts Skerritt at $12 million. The page gives biographical and career background, but it does not show how the number was built. There is no asset-by-asset breakdown, no list of salary or residual figures, no statement of liabilities, and no note on how the estimate is updated. Treat it as one publisher’s judgment, attributed to that publisher.
Other celebrity-estimate pages sometimes repeat the same number or a similar one. Repetition does not make an estimate more accurate, because those pages often draw on the same unstated assumptions. Unless a page explains its method and points to independent evidence, it adds no separate confirmation.
Career facts that explain the public interest
Skerritt’s long screen career is the main reason his name draws search traffic. The career facts below are documented, but none of them is a measure of income.

- Start of acting work: The Michigan Military and Veterans Hall of Honor profile says he began acting in 1962.
- Volume of work: The same profile says he appeared in more than forty motion pictures and over 200 television productions. These are counts of credits, not pay.
- Film debut: The American Cinematheque’s tribute from September 2021 identifies the 1962 feature War Hunt as his film debut.
- Notable roles: Both the Hall of Honor profile and the Cinematheque tribute cite his role as Duke Forrest in M*A*S*H, his Viper role in Top Gun, and his part in Alien. The Hall of Honor profile also names A River Runs Through It and Contact.
- Television recognition: The Cinematheque tribute notes his Emmy-winning leading role on Picket Fences.
What the sources do not establish
The available sources support the published estimate and the career background. They do not establish any of the following:
- His current assets, liabilities, or net worth calculated from documented holdings
- His salary history for any film or television series
- Residual or re-run income from past productions
- Real estate, investment, or business ownership
- His lifetime earnings or tax position
That gap matters for anyone trying to answer the question “how did he make his money?” The sources do not break his income into categories, so any specific explanation would be guesswork. Credits in a long career are not the same as a fortune, and a $12 million estimate does not tell you which projects contributed to it.

What Skerritt has said about Alien‘s budget
Skerritt’s own words are sometimes cited in discussions of his finances, but they concern the film, not his pay. In an interview with Film Comment, he recalled the changing budget context for Alien, saying: “$2 million and I don’t know who the director is.” He then recalled being told the budget was “$10 million, 12 million, something like that,” with Ridley Scott directing.
Those remarks describe what he remembered about the production budget. They do not state what he was paid, what share of the film he owned, or how much the production cost affected his compensation. If you quote the first line, keep the attribution and the context that it concerns the film’s budget.

In the same interview he also explained how much the director shaped his decision to take the role: “So much of this stuff is based on the directors, they’re so much part of the selection process.” That is a statement about career choices, not a financial claim.
How to read a celebrity net worth estimate
A single published number is easier to use when you check a few things first:
Rank #4
- Identify the publisher. Note whether the figure is attributed to a named site and whether the subject has confirmed it.
- Look for a method. If the page does not explain how it reached the number, treat it as an opinion.
- Check whether the number is dated. Estimates change, and a figure without a clear update date may be stale.
- Separate career facts from money. Film counts, awards, and budgets describe a career; they do not show what the person kept.
- Compare with more than one source. Agreement between sites counts only if those sites show independent evidence.
For Skerritt, the verifiable material is his filmography, his awards, and his own interview remarks. The $12 million figure remains a published estimate, and it should be quoted as one.
