There is no defensible public ranking of Eric Clapton’s ten highest-grossing songs: the available sources do not provide comparable worldwide revenue for each track. Sales, streaming royalties, publishing income, chart positions, and certifications are different measures. The evidence supports a more limited answer: some songs have documented chart histories or platform stream counts, but none of those figures establishes lifetime global earnings.
Why a reliable top-ten earnings list isn’t available
“Grossing” needs a defined accounting basis, territory, and period. Recorded-single sales are not the same as downloads, streaming royalties, or publishing royalties, and a combined figure would require a consistent method for valuing each one. The reviewed sources do not provide a song-by-song worldwide revenue table for Clapton’s catalog.

That means a list of ten songs ordered by lifetime global earnings would imply precision the public evidence does not support. Nor can chart rankings, award certifications, and stream totals be combined into a single earnings order: each measures something different.
What the available evidence does establish
Chart histories show performance in a particular market
Official Charts provides chart histories for “Tears in Heaven,” “Wonderful Tonight (Live),” “Layla – Unplugged,” and “Change the World.” Those records can establish how named releases performed in the chart market and period shown; they do not establish how much the songs earned worldwide over their lifetimes. Spotify totals are streams, not dollars
Kworb’s Spotify tracker, marked last updated October 3, 2026, reports 699,403,605 streams for “Wonderful Tonight,” 603,271,750 for “Cocaine,” and 416,214,193 for “Layla – Acoustic; Live at MTV Unplugged.” These are tracker-reported platform counts at that snapshot, not audited revenue figures. The “Layla” entry names a particular live acoustic recording; it should not be treated as a count for every version of the song. Counts can change over time. Certifications are milestones, not a worldwide sales ledger
Clapton’s official timeline says “Tears in Heaven” received an RIAA Gold Record Award. That is a certification milestone, not an exact global sales total or proof that it out-earned another song. The RIAA describes its Gold & Platinum program as recognizing recorded-music success across formats; a certification should be reported as a certification, not as a complete account of worldwide revenue. Which songs can be identified without pretending they form an earnings ranking?
The sources support discussing these examples, but not assigning them positions in a global gross-revenue top ten:
- “Wonderful Tonight” and “Cocaine”: Kworb’s October 3, 2026 Spotify snapshot lists them with the two largest stream totals among the figures cited here. That is a platform-specific popularity comparison, not an earnings comparison.
- “Layla”: The tracker’s reported total is specifically for “Layla – Acoustic; Live at MTV Unplugged.” Official Charts separately lists “Layla – Unplugged,” so recording versions and chart entries must not be conflated. Official Charts’ Eric Clapton history
- “Tears in Heaven”: It has an Official Charts history and the Gold certification noted on Clapton’s official timeline. Neither fact supplies its lifetime worldwide gross.
- “Change the World” and “Wonderful Tonight (Live): Official Charts includes both among Clapton’s chart-history entries. Their presence there does not determine how they compare in total earnings with other songs.
Clapton’s official timeline also identifies the Unplugged CD, a relevant release for listeners interested in the acoustic performance. Its existence and award history do not establish a song-by-song revenue ranking.

What would be needed to rank the songs by earnings?
A credible ranking would need comparable revenue data for every song, with the accounting scope made explicit: for example, whether it includes recorded-music income, publishing royalties, or both; which territories and years it covers; and how versions and collaborations are attributed. The public chart histories, certification statements, and platform counts cited above do not supply that accounting.
So the most accurate answer to “What is Eric Clapton’s biggest hit?” depends on what “biggest” means. A chart leader is a chart-performance answer; a stream leader is a platform-popularity answer; a best-selling or highest-grossing song requires sales or revenue data on a stated and comparable basis. The available evidence does not verify a worldwide lifetime earnings winner, let alone a ranked top ten.
