There is no defensible public ranking of the 10 highest-grossing MTV shows: the official sources available do not report comparable revenue totals by program. MTV has published rankings based on viewers and demographics, while Paramount reports revenue for its broader TV Media segment—not for individual shows. That means no source here can establish which MTV show made the most money, or whether Jersey Shore was the highest-grossing.
Why a “highest-grossing” MTV ranking cannot be verified
“Grossing” needs a defined measure before shows can be compared. It could mean advertising sold around a program, fees from distributors or streaming services, licensing receipts, consumer spending on merchandise, or a combination. Those measures are not interchangeable, and a show’s ratings do not reveal how much revenue it generated.

Paramount’s FY2024 Form 10-K describes TV Media revenue in three broad categories: advertising; affiliate and subscription fees; and licensing and other. For the segment as a whole, those categories represented approximately 43%, 41%, and 16% of revenue, respectively. The filing does not allocate those amounts to MTV, much less to individual programs. Its licensing description covers several kinds of business, including content licensed to secondary-market platforms, transactional viewing, DVD and Blu-ray sales, and fees from trademark use in consumer products, recreation, and live events. It gives no MTV show-by-show totals. Read Paramount’s FY2024 Form 10-K.
Without comparable show-level figures, ordering ten titles by earnings would require inventing or estimating numbers. Episode counts, longevity, audience rankings, and franchise size may help describe a show’s reach, but none proves its gross revenue.

What MTV’s audience data does show
MTV has released audience rankings for specific time periods and demographics. They offer useful evidence about which programs attracted viewers in those windows, but they are not earnings rankings.
Jersey Shore led a summer 2010 audience measure
In a September 2, 2010 release, MTV said Jersey Shore was the summer’s No. 1 original cable series for viewers aged 12–34 (P12-34), for the stated May 31–August 29 measurement period. MTV also reported that an episode airing August 26, 2010, reached a series-high 5.8 million viewers. Both figures describe audience performance, not revenue. See MTV’s 2010 ratings release.

Teen Mom also ranked strongly in 2010
In the same summer release, MTV ranked Teen Mom third among original cable series for P12-34 over that period. A separate year-end release ranked it second among original cable series in the third quarter. These are rankings for specified audience categories and time frames, not evidence that Teen Mom earned more than another show. Summer rankings; MTV’s year-end 2010 release.
Several MTV unscripted series appeared in 2018 demographic rankings
MTV’s February 5, 2019 ratings release named Jersey Shore Family Vacation, Teen Mom 2, Teen Mom OG, The Challenge, and Ex on the Beach among its selected top-10 rankings for P18-34. The release’s Nielsen-based data refers to defined measurement periods and categories; it does not rank those programs by revenue. See MTV’s 2019 ratings release.

Ratings, success, and earnings are different questions
A ratings record can support a claim about a show’s audience in a particular period. It cannot, by itself, answer how much the show earned. Revenue may depend on advertising, distribution agreements, licensing, and other sources, and the available segment-level filing does not show how those receipts are assigned to a title.
Likewise, calling a show “successful” depends on the measure. Jersey Shore has documented audience milestones in MTV’s 2010 reporting; that is not proof it earned more than other MTV programs across their full runs. The available evidence also does not establish an all-time comparison spanning original series and spinoffs, domestic and international performance, or consistent audience measures.

What a valid ranking would need
A credible list of MTV’s highest-grossing shows would need a consistent definition of revenue and comparable title-level figures from the rights holder or another reliable source. It would also need to state how it handles related series—for example, whether a franchise and its spinoffs are combined—and which markets and years are included. The sources cited here provide none of those comparable all-time figures.
A ranking based on ratings, franchise duration, or installment count could still be made if the underlying data were consistent. But it would need to be labeled plainly as an audience, longevity, or episode-count ranking—not as a list of shows that made the most money.
