Who bought Sheffield Wednesday?
The English Football League (EFL) confirmed on 2 May 2026 that the joint administrators had agreed to transfer Sheffield Wednesday’s assets to Arise Capital Partners LLC, a consortium led by David Storch alongside Michael Storch and Tom Costin. The EFL said the club met league requirements and was no longer regarded as being in administration. The joint administrators announced the completed sale on 5 May. The transaction means the answer to “Did Mike Ashley buy Sheffield Wednesday?” is no: the disclosed buyer was Arise Capital Partners LLC.
What happened to Mike Ashley’s reported bid?
The Guardian reported on 1 November 2025 that Mike Ashley was preparing a bid of about £10 million. That figure and bid status were press reporting, not an official transaction value confirmed by the EFL or administrators. The report is historical; the later completed sale was to Arise Capital Partners LLC. The Guardian report; EFL statement.

Was Anders Holch Povlsen involved?
The reviewed EFL and administrator announcements identify Arise Capital Partners LLC as the successful buyer but do not confirm that Anders Holch Povlsen made an offer, entered formal talks or had a continuing role. His alleged involvement therefore remains unverified in these authoritative records; it should not be presented as a confirmed bid or competing takeover.
How did Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership end?
On 24 October 2025, the EFL said Chansiri had taken steps to appoint administrators to Sheffield Wednesday Football Club and the company that owns Hillsborough. The league said administration triggered an automatic 12-point deduction under its regulations. Companies House records the club’s administrator appointment on 30 October 2025, followed by an administrator’s proposal on 5 March 2026 and a progress report on 2 June 2026. The BBC reported that sources said Chansiri rejected or did not respond to multiple offers. That is attributed reporting, not a finding in the EFL’s public announcement. BBC Sport report.

- Exit from administration: after the takeover, the EFL Board exercised its discretion not to impose a further 15-point deduction. EFL statement on the decision.
What conditions apply under the new ownership?
The EFL said Sheffield Wednesday would remain subject to a budget restriction for the next two seasons. Player registrations must comply with a business plan agreed jointly by the league and the new ownership. These conditions are distinct from the decisions on points deductions. Explaining the league’s approach on 2 May 2026, EFL Chief Executive Trevor Birch said: “Over this period there has been much discussion in relation to the many and varied issues which have arisen, but throughout the process the League has remained focused on engaging with the relevant parties to try and find a solution to secure a stable and sustainable future for Sheffield Wednesday, whilst always acting in the best interests of the EFL and the game more generally.” EFL statement, 2 May 2026.
