Robert Melville Grindlay (1786–1877) was a British East India Company officer, an artist who published views of western India, and the founder of a London travel agency that grew into Grindlays Bank. He served in the Bombay Native Infantry, retired in 1820, and established Leslie & Grindlay in 1828. The firm began by helping people travel to India; banking services and a long sequence of ownership changes came later.

Who was Robert Melville Grindlay?

Grindlay was born in St Marylebone, London, on 23 October 1786, and died in Nice, France, on 9 December 1877. He arrived in India in 1803 as an East India Company cadet and served in the Bombay Native Infantry from 1804 until retiring as a captain in 1820, aged 34. Arup K. Chatterjee’s 2018 account and the biographical entry by Klaus Karttunen document this military career.

What did Grindlay depict in India?

Grindlay made sketches and drawings during his time in India. He later published them as Scenery, Costumes and Architecture Chiefly on the Western Side of India, issued in parts in London from 1826 to 1830 by Smith, Elder & Co. The Rare Book Society of India catalogue records colour plates depicting subjects including Bombay, Gujarat, Hyderabad, temples, caves, forts and customs. Chatterjee describes the complete series as six parts with 36 hand-coloured aquatint plates.

The book links artistic documentation with the conditions that made it possible. Its images record particular places and architecture, but they are not a neutral or comprehensive survey of India: Grindlay was a British officer, and the work was produced and circulated through British military and publishing networks. That colonial vantage point is part of how to read the images, not a reason to disregard their historical and artistic value.

How did Leslie & Grindlay become a bank?

After returning to Britain, Grindlay kept ties with former colleagues in India. In 1828, he and a partner established Leslie & Grindlay in London to arrange sea passages, baggage handling and other travel support for people moving between Britain and India. The firm later added private banking and financial services, including insurance, savings and the encashment of cheques and drafts. Its clientele included people connected with the British army and business in India. A scholarly history traces the agency’s development into a financial firm and its later expansion.

The company’s name and ownership changed over time. NatWest Group’s heritage history gives this sequence:

Year Company name or event
1828 Leslie & Grindlay founded in London
1839 Renamed Grindlay, Christian & Matthews
1843 Renamed Grindlay & Co
1924 National Provincial Bank acquired the business; it continued separately as Grindlay & Co Ltd
1947 Renamed Grindlays Bank Ltd
1948 National Provincial sold its interest to National Bank of India
1958 The banks merged under a combined name

These stages matter: the founder’s travel agency became a bank through institutional growth, changing partnerships and acquisitions. The mature bank was not simply a business Grindlay personally continued to run. The heritage record also documents operations in Calcutta and Bombay and later branches in Simla, Delhi, Lahore and Peshawar. NatWest’s Grindlays Bank Ltd history and archive summary and the scholarly study on the firm’s ownership from 1828 to 2000 describe this institutional history.

What does “Indophile and imperialist” mean in this case?

Chatterjee uses the pairing to frame a tension rather than a simple verdict. He writes: “Robert Melville Grindlay’s life is one of the many metaphors for the history and ambivalence of the British Empire in India.” Grindlay’s drawings show an interest in Indian landscapes, architecture and elite culture; his military service and later business, meanwhile, were embedded in British imperial structures. His work connected aesthetic attention to India with the power and networks that gave him access to it.

“Indophile” and “imperialist” are Chatterjee’s interpretive terms, not labels that settle the meaning of Grindlay’s character. Holding both aspects in view offers a more useful account than treating admiration as proof of detachment from empire—or reducing the art to military service alone.
