There is no verified, apples-to-apples ledger of the ten largest book advances ever paid. The clearest record entry is Guinness World Records’ report of a $65 million advance offered for Barack and Michelle Obama’s two memoirs in 2017. That figure conflicts with a $60 million estimate in a 2026 ranking, and many other headline sums cover different rights or multiple books. The list below is therefore a sourced selection of major reported deals—not an audited all-time ranking.

Ten of the biggest reported book advances

The selection combines a Guinness record entry with widely reported deals collated by Celebrity Net Worth and historical reporting by The Washington Post and TIME. It is ordered by the published headline amounts, but the figures are not directly comparable: some are estimates, some cover packages, and rights differ. Where sources disagree, both accounts are identified rather than merged.

Reported amount Book or deal What the figure covers and who reported it
$65 million; $32.5 million per title by arithmetic Barack and Michelle Obama, Becoming and A Promised Land Guinness World Records says the 2017 advance offer covered both memoirs. The per-title number is an even arithmetic division, not a separately reported contract for each book. Celebrity Net Worth’s 2026 ranking gives the joint deal as $60 million instead. Guinness World Records; Celebrity Net Worth.
$20 million Barack Obama, A Promised Land Celebrity Net Worth’s 2026 ranking lists this amount for the individual title. It is distinct from Guinness’s combined $65 million offer for the two Obama memoirs; the available figures do not explain how to reconcile the individual-title listing with the joint agreement. Celebrity Net Worth.
$20 million Prince Harry, Spare Listed by Celebrity Net Worth in its 2026 ranking. The ranking does not establish a rights comparison with the other entries. Celebrity Net Worth.
$15 million Bill Clinton, My Life Celebrity Net Worth’s 2026 ranking lists $15 million. A contemporaneous Washington Post report in 2001 said Clinton would receive “more than $10 million,” citing a publishing source; Knopf did not disclose the actual amount. That earlier account described world publishing rights, including serial, English-language, translation, audio and electronic rights, while Clinton retained movie and dramatization rights. The contemporaneous report does not confirm the later $15 million figure. Celebrity Net Worth; The Washington Post.
$15 million Britney Spears, The Woman in Me Listed by Celebrity Net Worth in its 2026 ranking. Celebrity Net Worth.
Up to $14 million Hillary Clinton, Hard Choices Celebrity Net Worth’s 2026 ranking reports “up to” this amount, a qualification that should not be mistaken for a confirmed exact payment. Celebrity Net Worth.
$14 million Tom Clancy, Without Remorse Guinness World Records says it was reported in August 1992 that Berkeley Putnam paid this for North American rights. Guinness calls it the greatest advance for a single book of fiction. Celebrity Net Worth also lists $14 million. This is a one-book, territory-specific fiction deal, not a direct equivalent to a two-book memoir package. Guinness World Records; Celebrity Net Worth.
$10 million Bruce Springsteen, Born to Run Listed by Celebrity Net Worth in its 2026 ranking. Celebrity Net Worth.
$10 million Joe Biden, an untitled presidential memoir Celebrity Net Worth’s 2026 ranking lists this for an untitled memoir. The ranking does not provide a published title to compare with completed-book deals. Celebrity Net Worth.
$9 million Amy Schumer, The Girl With The Lower Back Tattoo Listed by Celebrity Net Worth in its 2026 ranking. Celebrity Net Worth.

This selection does not mean the tenth entry is definitively the tenth-largest advance. Celebrity Net Worth’s list includes additional deals—among them $8.5 million each for Alan Greenspan’s The Age of Turbulence and Pope John Paul II’s Crossing the Threshold of Hope, and $8 million each for Hillary Clinton’s Living History and J.K. Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy. Its displayed ranks include ties and skipped numbers, underscoring why a precise all-time order is not established.

How the biggest figures compare

The Obama agreement: a two-book nonfiction package

Guinness records the $65 million figure as an advance offered in April 2017 for Becoming and A Promised Land together. The books were published in 2018 and 2020, respectively. Guinness also reported sales as of January 2021: more than 14 million copies for Becoming and more than 3 million for A Promised Land. Those are dated figures, not current sales totals. Celebrity Net Worth’s 2026 ranking gives the joint deal as $60 million, so the two sources do not establish a single undisputed amount. Guinness World Records; Celebrity Net Worth.

Clancy: a fiction record with a limited rights scope

Guinness’s $14 million record is for one novel, Without Remorse, and specifically for North American rights. The reported deal dates to August 1992. It is therefore meaningful as Guinness’s single-book fiction record, but not as a like-for-like comparison with advances that bundle books or cover broader rights. Guinness World Records.

Clinton: a contemporaneous report and a later, higher figure

The Washington Post’s 2001 account reported more than $10 million for My Life, based on a publishing source, while noting that Knopf would not disclose the amount. It also described an extensive publishing-rights package and the movie and dramatization rights Clinton retained. Celebrity Net Worth later lists $15 million. The earlier article is evidence of what was reported at the time, not confirmation of the later figure. The Washington Post; Celebrity Net Worth.

Why historical package deals complicate a top ten

Some striking sums were reported for several books rather than a single title. TIME reported in 1988 that Stephen King had reportedly been promised $30–40 million for four thrillers. That is a package total, and it cannot be ranked directly against one-book advances without knowing how the amount was allocated. TIME also reported a $5 million advance for James Clavell’s Whirlwind covering hardcover and softcover rights, and a $10.1 million deal for Mary Higgins Clark’s next five novels. TIME.

The era’s bidding was sometimes described in theatrical terms. Michael Korda, then Simon & Schuster’s editor-in-chief, said: “It’s like stars in the movie business. If you want Cher for your movie, by God, you’ve got to pay Cher.” That is a 1988 comment on star-author bidding, not a current account of publishing economics. TIME.

What a book advance means for an author

An advance is money paid under a book contract and credited against royalties. In a simplified example, an author who receives an advance does not generally receive additional royalty payments until the book has earned out that advance under the contract’s accounting. If sales do not earn it out, the publisher generally bears that shortfall; an advance should not be treated as a personal loan that automatically has to be repaid from the author’s own funds. Actual payment schedules, royalty bases, reserves, rights and accounting depend on the contract. Celebrity Net Worth.

Why the headline is not the author’s profit

  • One title or several: a package advance may be divided across multiple books, or may not be allocated publicly at all.
  • Rights included: a figure for North American rights cannot be compared cleanly with one covering worldwide, translation, audio or electronic rights.
  • Reported amount or confirmed record: a media estimate, an offer, and a record entry are different kinds of evidence.
  • Advance versus later earnings: the advance is credited against contract royalties; it is not itself a statement of a book’s profit or the author’s total eventual income.

Why no definitive all-time ranking exists

Public accounts do not consistently distinguish an offer from a finalized advance, a single title from a multi-book contract, or a book’s advance from the total value of a rights package. Even the largest anchor deal here has conflicting published totals. Guinness supplies useful category-specific records, while rankings and news reports offer additional reported examples; none of the cited sources provides a standardized audited ledger of all advances. For that reason, “biggest” is best read as “among the largest publicly reported,” with the scope and source attached to each sum.
