If you’re resigning because you’re unhappy with management, keep the formal notice brief and professional: state that you’re resigning, identify your role, and give your notice period and intended last day once you have checked them. You do not have to use the letter to criticize your manager or explain your reason. Notice rules depend on your location, employment status and agreement, so verify the process before sending.
Use a short, neutral resignation letter
A resignation notice records your decision and the dates involved; it does not need to contain every concern you have about management. A neutral message can help you communicate clearly without writing something in anger that distracts from your departure or complicates the process.
Adapt this example to your workplace’s procedure and the notice requirements that apply to you:
Subject: Resignation – [Name]
Dear [Manager/HR contact],
Please accept this email as notice of my resignation from my position as [role] at [organization]. In line with my notice period of [period], I understand my final working day will be [date]. Please confirm that date and let me know any steps I should complete before I leave.

Regards,
[Name]
Do not include a reason, criticism, or expression of gratitude you do not mean. If you want to explain your decision, you can do so separately in an exit conversation or through the appropriate workplace channel. Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower says an employee resigning there is not required to provide a reason: MOM guidance on resignation. That is Singapore-specific guidance, not a rule to assume applies everywhere.
Check your notice period before naming a last day
Do not assume that “two weeks” is a universal legal requirement. Notice can depend on local law, employment status, an award or collective agreement, and your employment contract. Confirm which rules apply to you before committing to a final working day.

- Great Britain: Acas says an employee with at least one month’s service generally owes at least one week’s notice unless a different written statement applies; the contract may require a different period. See Acas guidance on notice when resigning.
- UK government guidance: GOV.UK gives a similar one-week baseline in the circumstances it describes. Check its resignation notice-period guidance and your contract.
- Australia: Fair Work says an award, enterprise agreement, or contract may set the notice period. See Fair Work’s resignation and notice guidance.
- Singapore: MOM says contractual notice must generally be served or salary paid in lieu, unless the notice requirement is waived by mutual agreement. Check MOM’s resignation guidance.
These examples apply in different jurisdictions and are not interchangeable. If you are elsewhere, or your employment status or agreement makes the position unclear, consult current official local guidance or an appropriate employment adviser.
Separate your resignation from a complaint
If you want management to understand why you are leaving, you can explain the issue in a separate conversation or grievance rather than putting it into the notice itself. Acas suggests raising a workplace problem informally first and then using a formal grievance if appropriate; that does not mean you must file a grievance before resigning. Its grievance procedure guidance explains the options.

Before resigning, consider whether the problem could be addressed and whether leaving now will affect your income. A grievance may help document or address a concern, but it is a separate choice from giving notice.

If you believe serious conduct by your employer has left you with no real choice but to resign, ordinary template advice may not fit. Acas describes constructive dismissal as a complex area and advises getting guidance; its resignation template is not intended for this situation. If practical, document what happened and contact a local employment adviser or regulator before resigning. See Acas guidance on constructive dismissal or contact its helpline through the official Acas site.
