Sometimes, but there is no guaranteed way to recover cryptocurrency sent to a scammer. Stop sending money, preserve the transaction records and report the fraud promptly. Be especially cautious of anyone who promises recovery for an upfront fee: that offer may be another scam. This guide focuses on U.S. reporting options; readers elsewhere should contact their local law-enforcement and consumer-protection agencies.

Can you get money back after a crypto scam?

It may be possible in some cases, but recovery is uncommon and becomes more difficult after money is converted to cryptocurrency. The CFTC warns that “Recovering money lost to fraud is rare and more difficult if dollars are first converted to bitcoin (BTC), Tether (USDT), or other crypto assets.” CFTC guidance on recovery scams

A report can give authorities information to investigate; it is not a promise that they will respond to you individually or return funds. A cryptocurrency transfer itself generally cannot be treated like a card payment that can simply be disputed or reversed. If you paid a scammer through a card, bank transfer, or another payment method, contact that provider quickly and ask whether any stop-payment or dispute option applies. The FTC explains possible steps for trying to stop or reverse certain payments, but none guarantees recovery. FTC guidance on refund and recovery scams

What to do immediately

  1. Stop payments and contact

Do not send more money to the original contact or to anyone claiming to be a recovery agent. Scammers may describe additional payments as taxes, release charges, verification, insurance, or fees required to unlock funds. Do not share identity, account, or financial details with unsolicited recovery claimants.

  2. Preserve the evidence

Save message threads, emails, call numbers, usernames, website and app names, screenshots, receipts, exchange records, and a timeline of what happened. Record the recipient wallet address, cryptocurrency and amount, transfer date and time, exchange or payment provider, and transaction ID or hash. These details can help authorities understand the transaction. If you do not have a transaction hash or other records, report what you do have; the FBI explicitly says victims should still submit an IC3 report when transaction information is missing. FBI guidance for cryptocurrency scam victims

  3. Contact the payment provider, if relevant

If any part of the payment went through a card, bank, or other provider, contact it promptly and ask what options exist for that specific transaction. This is separate from asking whether a crypto transfer can be reversed; do not assume that it can.

  4. Report the scam

In the United States, submit a report to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and consider contacting a local FBI field office. Include the transaction trail and preserved communications. The FTC also directs consumers to ReportFraud.ftc.gov and other reporting options; depending on the facts, a complaint to the CFTC or a tip to the SEC may also be appropriate. Not every crypto scam falls within every agency’s jurisdiction, and filing does not guarantee repayment.

What different recovery routes can—and cannot—do

Route What it may do Important limit
Payment provider Explain whether a card, bank, or other payment can be disputed or stopped. Options depend on the payment method and circumstances; this does not mean a completed cryptocurrency transfer can be reversed. FTC guidance
FBI IC3 and law enforcement Receive reports and information that may support investigation. A report is not a guarantee of an investigation, personal response, or returned funds. IC3 says it does not work with non-law-enforcement entities, including law firms or crypto services, to recuperate lost funds or investigate cases. IC3
Private recovery company May offer services, but it cannot itself compel an exchange to seize cryptocurrency. The FBI says private recovery companies cannot issue seizure orders; exchanges freeze accounts through internal processes or in response to legal process. FBI warning about false recovery claims
Civil litigation An attorney can assess whether a civil claim may be available based on the case. Whether a claim is viable, what it would cost, and whether it could lead to recovery depend on the facts and jurisdiction. The FBI identifies litigation as a possible option but does not predict outcomes. FBI guidance

How to spot a recovery scam

People who have already lost money can be targeted again by someone pretending to be an investigator, lawyer, regulator, exchange employee, or recovery specialist. Treat a recovery claim as suspicious if the person:

  • Claims to be from law enforcement, a court, or a regulator and asks you to pay a fee. The FBI says law enforcement does not charge victims a fee to investigate crimes. Verify a claimed FBI affiliation through a local field office rather than relying on contact details supplied by the claimant. FBI warning
  • Says it can force an exchange to freeze assets or issue a seizure order. Private recovery companies do not have that authority.

Do not access a suspected scammer’s systems, confront the people involved, or pay a third party to trace funds. Preserve what you have and share it with appropriate authorities.

If you consider hiring an attorney

Civil litigation may be worth discussing with a qualified attorney, but it is not a guaranteed recovery route. Independently verify the attorney’s license and relevant experience. Before hiring, get a clear explanation of the proposed work, fees, likely costs, and what the attorney can—and cannot—do. Do not treat a referral, recovery promise, or claimed connection to an agency as proof that a service is legitimate.
