The widely reported $193 million figure for Reddit CEO Steve Huffman in 2023 was not his salary or a cash paycheck: it described a compensation package dominated by stock and options. At the same time, Reddit’s moderators were described in 2024 coverage as unpaid volunteers. Huffman defended the equity-heavy package as tying his financial outcome to Reddit’s performance, while saying moderators were not company employees.
What did Reddit’s CEO actually receive?
Fortune reported that Huffman’s 2023 compensation package was valued at about $193 million, citing an SEC filing. The figure was predominantly equity, not salary. Fortune reported a salary of $341,346 and an incentive bonus of $792,000 for that year. The package followed cancellation of prior stock awards and their replacement with a new equity award involving stock and options.
Those figures describe different parts of compensation. Salary and bonus are not interchangeable with the headline value of an equity package: stock and options can be subject to vesting and their eventual value depends on the award terms and share price. The $193 million figure should therefore not be read as $193 million in cash received. Fortune’s March 2024 report attributed the explanation of the award structure and its rationale to Huffman.
How did Huffman defend the package?
Huffman said Reddit’s board set his pay based on performance and described the package as salary plus stock. He said the earlier awards had been cancelled and replaced with stock and options carrying escalating strike prices, a change he characterized as simplifying the awards and aligning his incentives with the company’s performance. He also said that, after selling his earlier stake and later returning as CEO, he needed to re-earn ownership. These are Huffman’s explanations as reported by Fortune, not independently established findings about the board’s motives.

His central defense was: “If the company does well, I will do well. If the company does not do well, I don’t either.” That is an argument for incentive alignment, not a claim that every component of the headline amount had already been realized.
Why were moderators unpaid?
In 2024 coverage, Reddit moderators were described as volunteers rather than paid Reddit staff. In an interview with Kara Swisher, Huffman said, “Moderators, first off, they’re not Reddit employees.” He argued that moderators should not be employees because they run their communities on their own terms, and said many had told him they did not moderate for money. Those remarks explain his stated view; they do not establish that every moderator agrees or that volunteer work has no costs or value.
Reddit’s business disclosures also make clear why volunteer moderation matters to the platform. Its annual report warned that the company relies on moderators acting in good faith and that losing enough moderators or experiencing moderator disruption could adversely affect its business and prospects. That describes business dependence on community governance; it does not make moderators employees or quantify their workload. Reddit’s 2024 annual report contains the risk disclosure.
Was moderator pay proposed?
Huffman discussed a possible user-to-community subscription model in which communities could capture value and decide whether to pay moderators, accept donations, or use the funds another way. The interview described a possible direction, not an implemented moderator-pay program. The sources available here do not establish a current arrangement in which Reddit pays moderators.

That distinction matters: a community choosing how to use subscription revenue would be different from Reddit employing moderators or paying them directly. It would also leave the decision to each community rather than guarantee compensation to moderators across the platform.
What does Reddit’s current moderator rule say about compensation?
Reddit’s current Rule 5 addresses compensation from third parties in exchange for moderation actions; it is not a general rule saying whether Reddit itself pays or employs moderators. The policy prohibits moderators from trading moderation actions for third-party compensation or favors, while allowing limited non-sponsored recommendations and community gifts. Reddit Help’s Rule 5 page was updated October 8, 2026.

Compensation figures can change dramatically depending on how equity is measured. Reddit’s 2025 proxy reported $861.8 million in “compensation actually paid” for its CEO for 2024, alongside $2.6 million in the Summary Compensation Table. The proxy explains that the SEC-defined “compensation actually paid” measure includes the year-end fair value of unvested awards and generally moves with the stock price. Reddit explicitly says the $861.8 million does not represent compensation actually earned, realized, or received.

That 2024 proxy figure is not the same thing as Huffman’s reported 2023 package, and neither should be casually translated into cash pay. Reddit’s 2025 proxy statement provides the definitions and comparison.

What is the underlying disagreement?
- Incentives versus fairness: Huffman’s defense is that equity ties his outcome to company performance. Critics can still question whether the size and design of an award are fair or reflect responsible stewardship.
- Volunteer autonomy versus sustainability: Keeping moderators outside the employment relationship can preserve community independence, but Reddit’s own risk disclosure shows the platform depends on moderators continuing to do the work.
- Community revenue versus company pay: A subscription economy that might let communities choose to compensate moderators is not equivalent to Reddit paying moderators directly, and the proposal is not evidence that such payments were implemented.
