Why Plants vs. Zombies Was Huge in China but EA Captured Less of the Money

Plants vs. Zombies became a widely recognized play brand among Chinese children, but piracy, mobile monetization and counterfeit merchandise shaped how much value EA captured.

Plants vs. Zombies had remarkable visibility among Chinese children, but popularity did not translate directly into revenue for Electronic Arts (EA). The historical explanation is a mismatch between demand and the channels used to capture it: piracy undercut sales of the original paid PC game, mobile in-app purchases later brought in revenue, and counterfeit merchandise left authentic-product demand poorly served.

How popular was Plants vs. Zombies in China?

In a 2016 report on a Niko Partners presentation, GamesBeat said the franchise was the second most-named play brand among Chinese children ages six to twelve in an unaided study. PlayStation ranked first and World of Warcraft third. That is a measure of brand recognition, not a count of paying customers. GamesBeat did not provide the survey sample size or full methodology, so the ranking should be treated as a reported snapshot rather than a precise measure of the whole market.

The same report described children playing with Plants vs. Zombies-themed cards. That kind of visibility helps explain why the franchise could feel ubiquitous even when EA was not capturing much value from every related purchase.

Why did popularity not produce strong PC sales?

The first Plants vs. Zombies was sold as a premium-priced PC game. Niko Partners analyst Michael Cai told GamesBeat that piracy weakened revenue from that model in China. In other words, a child could know and play the game without the purchase necessarily generating a sale for EA.

  • Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the international version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.

This is the first distinction to keep in mind: cultural reach and paid-copy sales are different outcomes. The report does not quantify how many copies were pirated or how much revenue was lost, so piracy explains the reported problem but cannot be used to calculate a specific financial impact.

How did mobile monetization change the picture?

PopCap, then part of EA, adapted the game for Chinese mobile audiences. A GDC Vault session overview describes the Shanghai team converting the classic premium game into a freemium release called Plants vs. Zombies: Great Wall Edition. The overview says it reached number one on Tencent’s Android platform and was, at the time, EA’s most profitable mobile-game launch in China. It does not state a revenue figure, and the claim is a historical account in a session overview rather than an audited financial disclosure.

GamesBeat separately reported that the free-to-play mobile sequel Plants vs. Zombies 2 began bringing in revenue through in-app purchases after the original premium model had struggled. The localized Great Wall Edition and the sequel are distinct releases; together, the accounts illustrate a shift from relying on an upfront purchase toward a mobile model with optional spending.

Where did merchandise fit in?

GamesBeat reported Cai’s view that themed cards and other merchandise being sold were counterfeit. He also argued that collectors wanted authentic products but did not know where to find them, and that EA had not invested in making the merchandise business work in China. This points to a potential licensing and distribution opportunity: demand for products can exist without the rights-holder capturing the sale.

The report does not quantify merchandise sales or lost licensing income. Nor does it establish a current official merchandise catalogue, local licensing partner, or route to buy authentic products. The point is about the market opportunity described at the time, not a claim about today’s availability.

Three channels, three different ways to capture value

Channel How it could generate money What the historical accounts say
Premium PC game A player pays for a copy before playing. Niko Partners analyst Michael Cai attributed weak early revenue in China to piracy of the original paid game, as reported by GamesBeat.
Free-to-play mobile The game is available without an upfront purchase, with revenue possible from in-app purchases. The GDC Vault overview describes the localized Great Wall Edition as a successful freemium launch; GamesBeat says Plants vs. Zombies 2 began generating revenue through in-app purchases. Neither source gives comparable revenue totals.
Merchandise Officially licensed goods can generate sales or licensing income for the rights-holder. GamesBeat reported counterfeit products and Cai’s view that EA had not built an effective merchandise business in China. No licensing split or loss estimate is provided.

These channels are not interchangeable. A large audience does not ensure that the publisher receives payment for pirated copies or counterfeit goods. Mobile purchases offered a different route to revenue, but the available historical accounts do not show how much each channel contributed or how they compared after costs.

What the figures do—and do not—show

GamesBeat’s 2016 article cited a $26 billion figure for China’s gaming market and a $5.5 billion figure for its mobile market, attributing the latter to Niko Partners. It also mentioned a $99.6 billion gaming-industry figure without identifying a primary data publication in the article text. These are period-specific figures, not current market estimates, and they do not reveal EA’s Plants vs. Zombies revenue.

The article’s 2025 update date does not make its 2016 market numbers or presentation findings current. Neither the GamesBeat report nor the GDC session overview establishes EA’s present-day China revenue from the franchise, a current merchandise licensing arrangement, or a numerical loss from piracy or counterfeits.

Why the gap matters

Plants vs. Zombies illustrates a basic business distinction: a brand can be widely recognized while its owner captures only part of the spending around it. In the historical account, piracy constrained the paid PC route, freemium and in-app purchases created mobile revenue opportunities, and counterfeit merchandise meant that visible product demand did not necessarily flow through EA. Recognition was evidence of popularity; it was not evidence of equivalent publisher income.
