Public records do show their reported stakes in the club as of November 2023 and document parts of Gnanalingam’s career at Malaysian port operator Westports and Bhatia’s history with QPR. Those facts explain some of their business backgrounds, but they do not verify the headline figure or establish the three men’s individual fortunes.
Is the £1.78 billion combined net-worth claim verified?
No reliable source identified a valuation date, calculation or clear definition for the £1.78 billion figure. It is also unclear whether the claim refers to the three owners’ personal wealth, family wealth or another measure. Without that information, the number should not be treated as an established combined net worth.
A company interest, a football-club shareholding and a family relationship are not interchangeable with a personal net-worth estimate. In particular, the wealth of the Mittal family cannot be attributed to Amit Bhatia, and Westports’ business or value cannot be treated as Ruben Gnanalingam’s personal wealth.
What QPR ownership figures have been reported?
Sky News reported on 23 November 2023 that Gnanalingam owned nearly 60% of Queens Park Rangers, Richard Reilly held 21% and Bhatia held just under 20% (Sky News). These are reported figures from that date, not a verified current ownership register. No current official cap table is established here.

Those percentages describe reported QPR stakes, not the owners’ total assets or the value of their personal wealth. They should not be used to calculate a net-worth figure without reliable information on the club’s valuation, the terms of each holding and each owner’s wider finances.
How did Ruben Gnanalingam build his business career?
Westports’ 2025 annual report records that Gnanalingam started as a trainee at Westports Malaysia in 1999. He left in 2000 to establish Makmal Group, returned to Westports as a director in 2005 and became CEO in 2009. The report says he later held senior executive leadership roles and was redesignated Executive Chairman from 1 February 2025. It also identifies him as QPR’s owner and vice-chairman (Westports annual reports).

Westports’ business includes port development and operations. Its annual report states that Gnanalingam had an indirect 3.10% interest in Westports Holdings as of 27 February 2026. That is a disclosed shareholding, not a valuation of his total assets or a complete measure of his personal wealth.
What is known about Amit Bhatia’s QPR involvement?
BBC Sport reported that Bhatia joined QPR’s board in December 2007 as the representative of his father-in-law, Lakshmi Mittal, after the Mittal family acquired a shareholding in the club. The BBC reported his appointment as chairman in August 2018 (BBC Sport). Sky News later reported that Bhatia held just under 20% of QPR in November 2023.

- Brand New Authentic Fan Scarf
- Newcastle Team name and mock crest imprinted on both sides
- Toon team colors of Black and White throughout | As worn by the fans at St James Park
- Soft acrylic knit, with white fringes at each end
- This Scarf Measures Over 5 feet long | Imported
This history establishes Bhatia’s role in QPR and its connection to the Mittal family’s investment. It does not establish Bhatia’s personal net worth, nor does it justify assigning him the wealth of his father-in-law or the wider Mittal family.
What is known about Richard Reilly’s wealth?
The available reporting describes Reilly as a US investor and says he held 21% of QPR in November 2023. The sources identified here do not establish his broader career, personal assets or contribution to the £1.78 billion claim. His club stake is not enough to calculate his net worth.

Does QPR’s search for financial backing prove anything about owner wealth?
In 2023, QPR engaged Montminy & Co to seek new financial backers. Sky News also reported that sources close to the club denied shareholders were considering an outright sale (Sky News). That report provides context about the club’s search for backing; it does not verify the owners’ personal fortunes or the £1.78 billion total.
