How Long Is Police Training in the United States?

Police academy training has no nationwide required length. BJS puts the 2022 average core program at 806 hours, with state and academy schedules varying and field training often following graduation.

There is no single U.S.-wide police academy length. The best national benchmark is 806 hours: the average core basic-training program at state and local law enforcement academies in 2022, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). That is an observed average, not a nationwide minimum, and it does not include all supervised training recruits may receive after graduation.

What does the 806-hour national average include?

BJS reported an average of 806 hours for core basic training at state and local law enforcement academies in 2022. The figure appears in its June 2025 statistical tables on 2022 academy training. It describes the basic academy program, not a rule that every state or academy must follow and not necessarily the full preparation period for every new officer.

Academy operator type also matters. In the same BJS data, average core training ranged from 681 hours at state POST or equivalent academies to 1,015 hours at county police academies. These are averages for different types of academy operators, not a ranking of states or a range of mandatory state minimums. BJS summarizes the national figure on its law-enforcement training page.

Why can the academy take different amounts of time?

States set their own standards, and an academy’s actual course can exceed a state minimum. The stated number of hours also does not determine calendar duration by itself: an intensive weekday course and a part-time or modular course can deliver training on very different schedules.

California: minimum hours and multiple formats

California POST sets a 680-hour minimum for its standard Regular Basic Course and a 750-hour minimum for its modular course. It says most certified academies exceed the standard 680-hour minimum by 200 or more hours, and some provide more than 1,000 hours. California offers both full-time intensive and part-time or weekend extended formats; its intensive format typically meets Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. See California POST’s basic-training guidance and Regular Basic Course information.

Illinois: a stated course length and calendar schedule

The Illinois State Police lists its local basic course as 640 hours over 16 weeks. This is a specific Illinois program and schedule, not a national standard. The current details are on the agency’s Local Training page.

Delaware: a state curriculum total

Delaware’s POST Commission lists 584 hours for its mandatory basic recruit curriculum. That state-specific total is another example of variation, not a substitute for the national average. Consult the commission’s Minimum Recruit Training requirements for the curriculum details.

Does police training continue after academy graduation?

Often, yes. BJS reports that 89.2% of academies required field training for all or some recruits after basic training. Among academies that oversaw field training, the average duration was 503 hours. BJS reports this phase separately from basic academy hours, so the 503-hour average should not be added to the 806-hour average as though it were a single nationwide total for each recruit; the figures describe different averages and academy populations. California POST, for example, gives a minimum of 10 weeks for participating agencies’ Field Training Program or 15 weeks for its Police Training Program. Details are in the California POST field-training FAQs.

How to check the timeline for a particular state or academy

For a useful local estimate, identify exactly which phase and schedule a published number describes. Check the state standards body and the academy that will deliver the course, since requirements and course schedules can differ and may change.

  1. Find the applicable state standard. Look for the state POST or equivalent agency’s current recruit or basic-course requirements.
  2. Confirm the actual academy course length. A minimum set by the state may be shorter than the course the academy provides.
  3. Check the calendar format. Ask whether the program is full-time, part-time, weekend, or modular; hours alone do not tell you how many weeks it takes.
  4. Ask what happens after graduation. Confirm whether supervised field training is required, how long it lasts, and whether the published timeline includes it.

The BJS national measure covers state and local academies; it does not establish a uniform duration for federal law-enforcement training pipelines. Also check that a figure applies to the same officer classification and course: California, for instance, describes its PC 832 arrest and firearms courses separately from the Regular Basic Course.
