The latest municipal project record located says site work has proceeded and the building permit is pending issuance; it does not give a confirmed opening date. The planned store is at 159th Street and LaGrange Road, on the former Petey’s II site.
Where is the planned Amazon store?
The proposed store is at the southwest corner of 159th Street and LaGrange Road in Orland Park, Illinois—not in the City of Chicago. The Village lists the project address as 9600 159th Street. The site covers approximately 35 acres, according to the Village of Orland Park.
Has the project been approved, and when will it open?
Yes. The Orland Park Plan Commission voted 6-1 in favor of the proposal on January 6, 2026; the Village Board then approved it on January 19, 2026. The commission vote was a separate earlier step, not the final board approval. The Village’s later project record says site work has proceeded and the building permit is pending issuance. That record does not establish whether a permit has issued since then, and the sources reviewed provide no confirmed opening date.
What kind of store is planned?
The Village describes a one-story, public-facing retail store selling groceries, household essentials, and general merchandise. It explicitly distinguishes the project from a warehouse or distribution center. Reporting on the proposal also describes back-of-house space for store operations and customer order pickup. In other words, the stated main use is customer-facing retail, with operational support space behind it—not a standalone distribution facility.

How large will it be?
Project documents give slightly different building-area figures. The Village’s press release describes an approximately 230,000-square-foot store; a later project record says roughly 225,000 square feet; and a detailed ordinance report lists 231,290 square feet. The records do not explain the variation, so the safest description is a store of roughly 225,000 to 231,000 square feet, depending on the document.
What concerns came up during public review?
Residents and commissioners raised concerns about traffic, the project’s scale, and possible effects on smaller local businesses. Plan Commissioner Daniel Sanchez cited traffic as his reason for dissenting, saying the area was already dealing with heavy traffic counts, according to Patch’s meeting coverage. Those comments document concerns raised during review; they are not measured findings about the store’s eventual effects.
