Gartner published its Magic Quadrant for Supply Chain Planning Solutions on 23 April 2024. It assessed 20 named vendors using two broad dimensions—Ability to Execute and Completeness of Vision—but the quadrant is a market-positioning aid, not a universal score of which software is best for every buyer. As of 8 October 2026, Gartner has published a newer Magic Quadrant for Supply Chain Management Suites; that report covers a broader category and is not a like-for-like update of the 2024 planning report.
What is the Gartner Magic Quadrant for supply chain planning?
It is an analyst report intended to help supply chain technology leaders evaluate vendors and select software suited to their planning needs. Gartner’s public summary says supply chain planning technology supports responsive, agile and flexible planning in service of a company’s strategic goals. The report was published on 23 April 2024 and names analysts Pia Orup Lund, Tim Payne, Joe Graham, Caleb Thomson and Jan Snoeckx. Gartner’s report page lists its sections, including the market definition, quadrant, inclusion and exclusion criteria, vendor strengths and cautions, evaluation criteria, market context and two notes—one on vertical or industry strategy and one on Gartner’s Supply Chain Planning Configure, Optimize, Respond and Execute (CORE) model. The public summary confirms those sections exist but does not disclose their detailed contents.
The full report is distinct from the chart alone: it contains analysis and criteria intended to give context to vendor positions. Gartner’s general advice is to “Use a Gartner Magic Quadrant as a first step to understanding the technology providers you might consider for a specific investment opportunity.” That guidance is a reminder to treat the visual as a starting point, not a procurement verdict.
Which vendors were included in the 2024 report?
Gartner’s public report page lists assessments for these 20 vendors:
#1 Best Overall
- Adexa
- AIMMS
- Anaplan
- Arkieva
- Blue Ridge
- Blue Yonder
- Coupa
- Dassault Systèmes
- e2open
- GAINSystems
- John Galt Solutions
- Kinaxis
- Logility
- o9 Solutions
- OMP
- Oracle
- RELEX Solutions
- SAP
- Slimstock
- ToolsGroup
This is the public list of vendors covered in the full report, not a claim that all were assessed identically or that inclusion endorses any product. Gartner says not all providers are included in a Magic Quadrant, and absence does not establish that a vendor is nonviable or noncompetitive. The public summary does not disclose the report’s detailed inclusion thresholds.
How to read the two axes and four quadrants
Gartner’s Magic Quadrant positions providers using two broad criteria: Ability to Execute and Completeness of Vision. The categories describe broad market positioning; they are not grades that translate directly into fit for your organization.
Rank #2
| Position | Gartner’s general description | What a buyer should test |
|---|---|---|
| Leader | Executes against its vision and is positioned for tomorrow. | Whether its breadth and direction match your use cases, operating model and priorities. |
| Visionary | Understands market direction but has less-proven execution. | Whether the vision is relevant to your plans and whether delivery evidence is sufficient for your risk tolerance. |
| Challenger | Executes well today but may not demonstrate market direction. | Whether strong present-day delivery addresses your needs, and whether its future direction matters to your investment horizon. |
| Niche Player | Focuses on a segment or has more limited ability to innovate or compete broadly. | Whether focused capabilities or industry fit matter more to you than broad market coverage. |
These definitions come from Gartner’s general methodology, not from a vendor-specific explanation of the 2024 supply chain planning scores. Gartner says evaluations can use up to 15 weighted criteria across the two axes. Execution criteria may include products and services, viability, sales execution and pricing, market responsiveness, marketing execution, customer experience and operations. Vision criteria may include market understanding, marketing and sales strategies, product strategy, business model, vertical or industry strategy, innovation and geographic strategy. The public sources do not establish which possible criteria the 2024 planning report applied in detail or what weights it assigned; avoid inferring specific scores from the general list. Gartner’s methodology page describes the framework.
What does the publicly visible 2024 chart show?
A May 2024 Kinaxis investor presentation reproduces a chart attributed to Gartner’s April 2024 report. In that reproduced chart, Kinaxis, Oracle, OMP, Logility and Blue Yonder appear in the Leaders quadrant. The presentation is hosted by Kinaxis, a vendor included in the chart, so this is limited visual evidence rather than an independent comparison or the complete Gartner report. Its accompanying caveat says Gartner does not endorse vendors or advise selection solely on the basis of the highest ratings. The visible placements should therefore be read as chart positions, not as proof of product superiority or business outcomes.

How should you use the quadrant when choosing software?
Start with the planning problem your organization must solve, then use the quadrant to identify questions for a more specific evaluation. A high position on either axis cannot tell you whether a product fits your data, processes, industry, implementation constraints or budget.
- Define the decision. Specify the planning processes in scope, business goals, users, geographies and industry requirements. Separate essential needs from capabilities that would be useful but not decisive.
- Translate the axes into evidence. For execution, ask for relevant product demonstrations, implementation references, operating-support details and evidence of delivery for organizations like yours. For vision, test the product direction against your roadmap rather than assuming a broad strategy will benefit your use case.
- Compare practical fit. Assess product and service coverage, integration and data requirements, customer experience, implementation feasibility and commercial terms. These factors can determine suitability even when vendors occupy similar positions in the chart.
- Seek evidence beyond the quadrant. Gartner points readers to complementary sources such as Critical Capabilities, Peer Insights and analyst discussion. Check current vendor documentation and speak with implementation references whose needs resemble yours; the quadrant alone does not establish current capabilities or customer outcomes.
- Review the full report if its detail matters. The public summary does not expose the detailed 2024 vendor strengths and cautions, scoring weights, inclusion thresholds or CORE model explanation. Do not fill those gaps by guessing from a dot’s location or from the section headings.
Gartner itself cautions against focusing only on Leaders: a Challenger or Niche Player may be a better match for a particular buyer. The vendor list is also not exhaustive of the market, so include other credible options that meet your requirements rather than treating report inclusion as a prerequisite.
Rank #4
Is the 2024 report still current?
It remains a dated snapshot of the supply chain planning vendor landscape as of the report’s publication, not a current comparison of product releases, prices, implementation timelines or vendor capabilities in October 2026. Gartner’s public abstracts do not establish those current details; verify them directly with vendors and through recent, use-case-specific customer evidence.
Gartner subsequently published Magic Quadrant for Supply Chain Management Suites on 11 August 2026. Its public summary describes suites spanning planning, execution and collaboration and lists nine vendors for that report. It is newer, but its broader scope means it should not be treated as a direct replacement or like-for-like update to the 2024 planning-solutions report. Gartner’s public document listing provides the later report’s abstract.
