In Skytrax’s 2025 awards, Virgin Atlantic ranked first overall for Premium Economy, followed by Japan Airlines, Emirates, Singapore Airlines and EVA Air. But “best” depended on what you valued: Emirates topped the seat category, while Virgin Atlantic led overall and for catering. These were customer-satisfaction rankings, not technical tests of every aircraft or a guarantee that the same seat flies on every route.
Which five airlines led Premium Economy in 2025?
The five carriers commonly grouped in the 2025 comparison were Japan Airlines (JAL), Emirates, EVA Air, Singapore Airlines and Virgin Atlantic. AeroTime’s January 17, 2025 roundup listed them in that order. Skytrax’s 2025 World Airline Awards ranked them differently in its overall Premium Economy category:

Seat dimensions in this table are figures reported by AeroTime in its January 2025 comparison, not standardized measurements independently verified across each airline’s fleet. Configurations can vary by aircraft and cabin generation, so the numbers are a starting point rather than a promise about a particular flight.
Why did the rankings differ by category?
Skytrax separated overall Premium Economy, seats and catering into distinct award categories. The 2025 results were not interchangeable:

Delta Air Lines ranked fifth for seats and Cathay Pacific fifth for catering. Skytrax’s awards reflect customer satisfaction; they are not a laboratory comparison of every seat model. A carrier can therefore lead overall without leading the seat category, and a strong catering result may matter more to one traveler than a seat ranking.
What distinguished each airline’s offering?
Virgin Atlantic: top overall and for catering
Skytrax ranked Virgin Atlantic first overall and first for Premium Economy catering in 2025, while placing its seats third. AeroTime’s comparison reported a 38-inch pitch and a width range of 18–21 inches, with 7–8 inches of recline. That width range should not be read as one consistent specification: the operating aircraft and seat variant matter.

Japan Airlines: second overall, with a longer reported pitch
JAL placed second overall and second in the seat category. AeroTime reported 19-inch width and 42-inch pitch, the largest pitch figure among the five in its table, and described the recline as occurring within the seat shell. JAL calls its international Premium Economy product JAL SKY PREMIUM and notes that specifications may change by aircraft. The airline also received Skytrax’s 2025 Best Premium Economy Class in Asia award; that regional recognition does not mean every JAL aircraft has an identical cabin.
Emirates: the 2025 seat-category winner
Emirates ranked third overall but first in Skytrax’s 2025 Premium Economy seat category. AeroTime reported 19.5-inch width, 40-inch pitch and 8 inches of recline. Its seat-category win is a useful distinction for travelers prioritizing the seat itself; it does not make Emirates the overall winner in the 2025 ranking.

Singapore Airlines: strong catering result
Singapore Airlines ranked fourth overall and second for Premium Economy catering in Skytrax’s 2025 awards. AeroTime reported 19.5-inch width, 38-inch pitch and 8 inches of recline. Check the aircraft and route before relying on those dimensions, because the comparison does not establish that they apply to every Singapore Airlines Premium Economy cabin.
EVA Air: a new 787-9 seat announced in 2025
EVA Air ranked fifth overall and third for catering in Skytrax’s 2025 results. AeroTime reported 19.5-inch width, 38-inch pitch and 8 inches of recline. Separately, EVA’s February 17, 2025 announcement described a fourth-generation Premium Economy seat for its Boeing 787-9: 28 seats in a 2-3-2 layout, a cradle-motion mechanism with recline equivalent to 8 inches, and 15.6-inch monitors. The release identified Taipei–Jakarta as the initial route; other routes were plans at the time, not confirmation of current deployment.

How to decide whether the upgrade is worth paying for
A ranking can help narrow choices, but it cannot settle the value of an upgrade for your itinerary. Compare the seat and the total trip on the specific flight you may book.
- Confirm the operating aircraft. Check the flight details and seat map for the aircraft type and cabin configuration. A carrier-wide Premium Economy label does not identify the exact seat version.
- Compare more than pitch. Look for seat width, recline mechanism, leg or footrest support and whether the seat shell or cradle changes how reclining affects the passenger behind. Pitch alone does not establish comfort.
- Choose the ranking that matches your priorities. For the 2025 award results, Emirates led the seat category; Virgin Atlantic led overall and for catering. The results describe different measures.
- Check the whole itinerary and fare difference. Consider routing, schedule and the price of the upgrade alongside cabin amenities. No fare comparison is established here, so the rankings cannot tell you whether a particular upgrade is good value.
Product lineups can change after an award year. For example, ANA said in an April 9, 2025 announcement that it planned to introduce new RECARO Premium Economy seats sequentially on long-haul international 787-9 aircraft starting in fiscal 2026. The announced seat has 40-inch pitch and 9-inch total recline. That later product change is a reminder to treat a 2025 comparison as a dated snapshot, not a current fleet-wide guide.
