The right choice depends on your budget, the body style and space you need, fuel use, features, and the condition of the specific car. The models below are a practical shortlist drawn from Edmunds’ U.S. recommendations for vehicles under $15,000 in 2024—not a reproduction of an unknown original top-ten ranking or a guarantee that these cars still sell for that price.
Five used-car examples for different needs
Edmunds’ 2024 recommendations, republished by the Associated Press, covered several vehicle types. The model years are the examples in that dated list; they are not current price or availability guarantees. [Associated Press]

|---|---|---|---|
| Mazda 3 | 2014–2018 | Small car | Consider if you want a compact car rather than an SUV or pickup. |
| Honda CR-V | 2012–2016 | Small SUV | Consider if a small SUV suits your passenger and cargo needs. |
| Honda Accord | 2013–2017 | Midsize car | Consider if you want a midsize sedan. |
| Toyota Highlander | 2014–2019 | Midsize SUV | Consider if you need a larger SUV; check the seating and cargo layout on the specific example. |
| Toyota Tacoma | 2005–2015 | Pickup | Consider if a pickup is a better match for your needs than a car or SUV. |
These are U.S.-market examples selected for an under-$15,000 list in 2024. Edmunds emphasized reliability ratings, owner reviews, and vehicle history; the cited list does not establish that every example remains under that budget today. How to build a shortlist that fits your budget
- Set a total spending limit. Decide what you can afford for the purchase and related costs before settling on a model. A model-year range from a 2024 list is only a starting point; compare actual vehicles available in your local market.
- Choose the body style and space you need. Think about passenger capacity, cargo, and whether a small car, midsize car, SUV, or pickup fits your routine.
- Separate essentials from nice-to-haves. Car and Driver recommends choosing a budget and body style, then distinguishing must-have features from desirable extras. [Car and Driver’s used-car buying guide]
- Compare candidates on more than reputation. Check fuel use, powertrain, safety equipment, and whether the features you need were standard on that model year. Use reliability information relevant to the model year or generation when available.
- Evaluate the specific car. Review its history and maintenance records, and inspect its condition rather than assuming a well-regarded model is automatically a sound purchase.
What reliability rankings can—and cannot—tell you
Consumer Reports’ 2024 used-car brand ranking, as reported by Kelley Blue Book, was based on subscriber reports about 2014–2019 vehicles and problems experienced in the previous 12 months. Its scores were Lexus 75, Toyota 72, Mazda 59, Acura 57, and Honda 55 on a 100-point scale. These are brand-level survey results, not model-specific predictions or guarantees about any one used car. The survey drew on Consumer Reports subscribers, so its sample may not represent every used-car owner. [Kelley Blue Book’s report]
#1 Best Overall
Consumer Reports says its used-car recommendations consider original road-test performance, multiple years of above-average reliability, and standard electronic stability control for the model year. Car and Driver describes a different ranking method: roughly 200 data points, including acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, value, and driving enjoyment. These methods answer different questions and should not be treated as one combined score. [Consumer Reports used-car coverage] [Car and Driver used-car rankings]
As Consumer Reports program leader Steven Elek explained in the Kelley Blue Book report, “Brands like Lexus and Toyota have a history of conservative redesigns, incrementally improving their entire product line, rather than introducing many all-new systems.” That observation helps explain a brand-level result, but it does not replace checking a particular vehicle’s history and condition. Check the individual car before committing
A ranking can help narrow the field; it cannot tell you whether a particular car was maintained well, damaged, or abused. Edmunds’ advice, republished by the Associated Press, is to review accident and problem history and avoid vehicles that show neglect or abuse. [Associated Press]
- Review available vehicle-history information for reported accidents and other problems.
- Look for maintenance records and signs of neglect or abuse.
- Check the actual mileage, condition, equipment, and ownership details against what the seller says.
- Have the car inspected independently before purchase if you need a clearer assessment of its mechanical condition.
Why used-car rankings need a date and a market
In a June 2024 American Experiences Survey of 2,032 U.S. adults who had been in the vehicle market during the prior year, 40% said they were considering only used vehicles, 31% only new vehicles, and 24% both. Consumer Reports reported the findings in August 2024. The figures describe that survey’s respondents and period; they are not a measure of current demand or a prediction of prices. [Consumer Reports survey release]
That date matters when using a list. The 2024 model examples and reliability survey are useful inputs, but local inventory, asking prices, and an individual car’s condition can change the buying decision. Use the models as candidates to investigate, then compare the actual vehicles you can afford.
Quick Recap
Rank #4
- A brash, fast-talking used car salesman wants to leave the business world and enter politics. First, though, he must help his boss save his used car lot from being taken over by his malicious and unscrupulous brother, who runs a rival used car lot directly across the highway.
