Derby County reported £31.5 million in wages for 2024/25, its first season back in the Championship. That is a club-wide figure—not a total for first-team players alone. Third-party estimates put Derby’s player-squad wages at about £12.3 million to £12.7 million, but the available figures do not establish a definitive, like-for-like rank among all 24 Championship clubs.
What is Derby County’s wage bill?
Derby County Supporters Board notes report wages of £31.5 million in 2024/25, up from £22 million in 2023/24, when the club was in League One. The club said the rise primarily reflected investment in the first-team squad and increased staffing across the wider business and academy. Derby County Supporters Board notes
That broad scope matters: the £31.5 million figure is not a disclosure of what Derby paid its first-team players alone. A separate third-party compilation lists £31.3 million in staff costs for Derby in 2024/25, alongside £31.9 million in revenue. The similar scale is useful context, but “staff costs” and the club’s wages summary should not be assumed to be identical measures. SalarySport’s Championship table
Why player-wage estimates are much lower
Two 2025 third-party lists estimate Derby’s player-squad wages at £12.264 million and £12.74 million a year. Planet Football says its figures are industry estimates derived from Capology; Sportscasting also presents its number as an estimate. Neither is an audited disclosure of the club’s actual payroll.

| Figure | What it measures | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| £31.5m | Club-wide wages, 2024/25 | Derby County Supporters Board notes; includes staffing beyond first-team players. |
| £31.3m | Staff costs, 2024/25 | SalarySport third-party table; not necessarily identical in scope to the club’s wages summary. |
| £12.264m | Estimated player-squad wages | Planet Football, January 2025, citing Capology industry estimates. |
| £12.74m | Estimated player-squad wages | Sportscasting, March 2025; estimate, not an audited payroll figure. |
The gap is not evidence that one figure is necessarily wrong. The club-wide totals cover a broader workforce, while the smaller figures estimate player salaries and use different methods. They should not be subtracted from one another or compared as though they were two audited readings of the same payroll.
Where Derby sits among Championship clubs
A single exact league position cannot be supported by the available comparisons. Sportscasting’s 24-club estimate list would place Derby around 18th by estimated squad wages, but that is an approximate position within that particular list—not an official ranking. The estimates differ by publication date and assumptions.

On a broader accounts-based measure, SalarySport displays Derby’s £31.3 million staff costs in 12th place in its table. That is only the ordering of the clubs shown: the compilation is incomplete, and some entries use different reporting seasons. For example, it lists Middlesbrough at £36.4 million and West Bromwich Albion at £37.05 million; it does not provide a staff-cost figure for QPR. Those entries do not create a complete, same-season Championship ranking.
- Club-wide wages or staff costs show the broad cost of employing the club’s workforce, not just its first-team payroll.
- Estimated player-squad wages offer an approximate comparison of player pay, not an audited account of actual spending.
- Wages as a share of revenue indicate how much reported turnover is absorbed by the stated wage or staff-cost measure; they do not by themselves establish squad strength or competitive results.
SalarySport calculates Derby’s 2024/25 staff costs at 98.3% of its £31.9 million revenue. That is a club-wide staff-cost-to-revenue ratio, not a player-wages-to-revenue ratio.

Derby’s 2024/25 campaign was its first in the Championship after promotion, and the club retained its place in the division. Its accounts report revenue of £31.9 million, up from £19.4 million, with league and broadcasting income increasing from £2.9 million to £12 million. The accounts also report an £11.3 million loss for the year. Derby County’s 2024/25 accounts
The supporters-board summary records the £9.5 million increase in wages between 2023/24 and 2024/25 and attributes it mainly to investment in the playing squad and more staff across the business and academy. Revenue growth and wage investment help explain the financial context of the return to the Championship, but they do not, on their own, show how Derby’s payroll compares with every rival.
