There is no public confirmation that Birmingham City had a release clause in Jude Bellingham’s agreement. A 2021 report attributed to Sport1 instead said Birmingham had negotiated a 5% sell-on fee when Bellingham joined Borussia Dortmund, and separately said his Dortmund contract contained no release clause at that time. Those details are reported, not confirmed by a published contract or official club statement.
Release clause or sell-on fee: what the report says
A release clause and a sell-on fee are different provisions. A release clause is a reported mechanism allowing another club to trigger a transfer at a specified threshold. A sell-on fee is a former club’s reported entitlement to a share of a player’s future transfer fee.
In 2021, Bulinews, attributing its information to Sport1, reported that Birmingham had secured a 5% sell-on fee in the 2020 transfer and that Bellingham’s Dortmund contract had no release clause at that time. The contract is not publicly available in the cited material, and neither club officially confirmed those clause details. Bulinews’ report
What is known about the 2020 transfer fee?
Bellingham’s move from Birmingham to Dortmund was completed in July 2020, when he was 17. Dortmund confirmed the transfer but said it would not release the financial terms. Media outlets reported different figures, which should not be treated as an officially confirmed fee.

Does the 2023 Real Madrid transfer confirm Birmingham’s share?
No. Dortmund’s June 2023 announcement described Bellingham’s move to Real Madrid as involving a high fixed fee and performance-related variables over six years, but it did not state Birmingham’s reported sell-on percentage or confirm that Birmingham received a payment. The announcement cannot establish either point. Borussia Dortmund
