Mike Ashley was reported as a bidder for Sheffield Wednesday in December 2025, but he did not take over the club. Arise Capital Partners LLC completed the purchase on 2 May 2026, ending the administration process. The main concerns during the sale were creditor repayments, a possible EFL points deduction and investment needs at Hillsborough and the training ground.
What happened to the Sheffield Wednesday takeover?
The phrase “final three” refers to an earlier stage of the sale process, not the club’s current ownership. On 19 December 2025, BBC Sport reported that Mike Ashley and a joint American bid involving John McEvoy and members of the Storch family were the two offers it understood remained in contention. The club was in administration.
A preferred bidder was identified in December, but that deal did not complete. BBC Sport reported on 6 January 2026 that the selected group was led by James Bord and Felix Romer, with Alsharif Faisal Bin Jamil described as its chief executive. That bid later collapsed. In March, Arise Capital Partners became the preferred bidder; Ashley was still understood to have made a bid at that point.
The EFL confirmed on 2 May 2026 that Arise Capital Partners, led by David Storch alongside Michael Storch and Tom Costin, had acquired the club’s assets and Wednesday had exited administration. The administrator, Begbies Traynor Group, also announced completion. Ashley was a reported bidder, not the successful buyer.

Why were the financial terms a concern?
Creditor repayments and the 25p threshold
In its December 2025 account, BBC Sport reported that paying creditors and administrators could cost around £35m. It described the EFL’s insolvency threshold as requiring unsecured creditors to receive at least 25p for each pound owed. These were reported figures and rules relevant to the sale process at that time, not a final account of the club’s debts or sale price.
The potential 15-point deduction—and the outcome
BBC Sport reported in December that failing to meet the creditor threshold could bring a 15-point deduction, ordinarily at the start of the following season. In March 2026, it reported that Arise’s offer did not meet the threshold. Chansiri, described as the main creditor, was understood to have loaned the club £60m over more than a decade; BBC Sport reported that £15m of that debt would need to be repaid to avoid the points loss under the threshold issue then being discussed.

That was a conditional risk during the process, not the eventual sporting sanction. When the sale completed, the EFL said it would not impose the additional 15-point deduction. Instead, Wednesday was placed under budget restrictions for the following two seasons. Begbies Traynor Group said the club would begin the upcoming season on zero points under the agreed outcome.
What infrastructure concerns were reported?
BBC Sport reported that Sheffield City Council had closed Hillsborough’s North Stand during the summer of 2025 over concerns about its structural integrity, then lifted the prohibition notice before the club’s first home match. The report also said the stadium and training ground needed substantial expenditure to meet modern standards. It did not provide a repair budget or a current structural assessment, so the report does not establish a present-day safety condition or a specific amount the new owners must spend.

What was known about Ashley and supporter opinion?
BBC Sport’s December 2025 report noted that Ashley owned Newcastle United from 2007 to 2021, described him as unpopular with many Newcastle supporters and said he had a reputation for operating within the club’s means. That account concerns his time at Newcastle; it does not establish how Sheffield Wednesday supporters viewed his reported bid. Available reporting does not provide representative polling or a club-wide measure of Wednesday fan sentiment about Ashley.
At the time of the bidder report, captain Barry Bannan told BBC Sport: “We definitely need it. We need a boost at the minute because we’ve lost a lot of games.” His comment conveyed the squad’s need for a takeover boost then; it was not an endorsement of a particular bidder.

Where does Sheffield Wednesday stand now?
The ownership question was resolved when Arise completed its purchase and Wednesday left administration on 2 May 2026. The sale did not reverse the club’s relegation: BBC Sport reported that Wednesday had been relegated to League One on 22 February, with 13 matches still to play. The next phase therefore began with a new owner, two seasons of EFL budget restrictions and the club competing in League One.
