Sometimes, but Microsoft does not promise that you can buy a game from any other country’s Xbox Store. Its guidance recommends changing your Store region when moving long-term, and warns that account funds do not transfer and some purchases may not work in another region. If you are relocating, update your console location and check billing requirements; if you are shopping elsewhere while staying put, do not assume a console setting, foreign payment method, or gift card will make the purchase work.
What Microsoft’s region guidance means for buying games
Microsoft says, “We recommend you change your region only if you’re moving to a new country or region for a long time.” That frames a Store-region change as a move-related step, not a guaranteed way to shop across marketplaces. Microsoft does not promise that a particular game can be bought across any two regions or that every payment method will be accepted. Microsoft’s country or region guidance is the relevant starting point for a move.

For Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, the support page directs users to sign in and go to Profile & system > Settings > System > Language & location, select the new country or region under Location, then restart the console. Xbox 360 uses a different profile-migration process; Microsoft warns that migration can affect subscriptions and services.
What to check before you try to buy
- Reason for changing region: Microsoft recommends doing so for a long-term move, rather than treating it as a general shopping workaround.
- Game availability: Confirm that the title is listed in the Store for the relevant country. Availability for one game does not establish that another can be purchased there.
- Checkout requirements: Microsoft says you may be prompted to update billing information on your first purchase in a new locale. Its guidance does not guarantee acceptance of a foreign-issued card or billing address, so check the current checkout requirements for the countries involved.
- Type of purchase: Games, subscriptions, apps, movies, account balance, and gift cards can have different region restrictions. Do not assume the rules for one apply to another.
What happens to your account balance when you change regions?
Microsoft says, “The funds in your Microsoft account will not move with you.” It also says funds cannot be transferred between regions and advises spending your balance before changing your account location. A region change therefore should not be treated as a way to carry unused Store credit into the new marketplace.

Can a gift card from another country pay for the game?
Not as a reliable general workaround. Microsoft’s Xbox Gift Card listing says cards are issued in local currency and work only in the country where purchased. A card bought for a different country’s Store may not be usable for the purchase you have in mind. Check Microsoft’s Xbox Gift Card terms for the card and country you are considering.
Microsoft’s code-redemption guidance says that after Microsoft or Xbox gift cards, download codes, and tokens are redeemed to an account, the balance can be spent at Microsoft Store online, on Windows, or on Xbox. That explains where redeemed balance may be used; it does not override the country restriction Microsoft states for Xbox Gift Cards.

Will a game bought in one region work after you move?
Microsoft warns that items obtained in one region might not work in another. Its examples include games, apps, movies, subscriptions, and account balance, but it does not give a compatibility result for every individual title. Check the specific game and any related service before relying on continued access after a move.

The outcome depends on the countries involved, whether the game is sold in the target Store, the payment method and billing details accepted at checkout, and whether you are moving or trying to shop in another marketplace while remaining where you are. The official guidance does not settle every combination. For a definite answer, verify the exact game and payment method with the current Store checkout or Microsoft support for the relevant countries.
