Wintrack Inc said it would stop importing and exporting in India from October 1, 2025, after alleging harassment and retaliation by Chennai Customs officials. The customs department denied the allegations and said the shipment at the center of the dispute raised classification and compliance issues. The Ministry of Finance said it had asked the Department of Revenue to conduct an inquiry; no outcome is reported in the available account.
What Wintrack said happened
In a statement reproduced by Scroll, Wintrack said: “From October 1, 2025, our company will cease import/export activities in India.” The company alleged that Chennai Customs officials had harassed it over the preceding 45 days and retaliated after it raised concerns about bribery. The 45-day duration is Wintrack’s claim, not an independently established finding.
The announcement concerns the company’s import and export activities in India. It does not establish that Wintrack ceased to exist or that all of its other operations ended.
What the shipment dispute was about
Wintrack founder Prawin Ganeshan said the dispute involved a shipment of personal massagers. According to his account, officials questioned why charging cables had not been declared separately and requested compliance documents, delaying the shipment.

Scroll described EPR as Extended Producer Responsibility registration related to battery recycling, and LMPC as the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules concerning weights and labels. These were among the requirements discussed in the dispute; the available report does not independently determine whether the shipment or its paperwork complied.
Chennai Customs’ response
Chennai Customs called the allegations “serious and false” and denied harassment or any demand for a bribe. The department said the shipment had been misclassified, rechargeable batteries made EPR registration mandatory, and Wintrack had submitted incorrect documentation. Those statements are the department’s account, not conclusions shown to have been independently adjudicated.

In the response quoted by Scroll, the department said: “At no stage was any payment or bribe demanded – all queries pertained strictly to mandatory statutory compliance.”

Scroll reported on October 3, 2025, that the Union Ministry of Finance had asked the Department of Revenue to conduct an inquiry into the allegations. The ministry said: “The matter is being dealt with utmost seriousness, and the Government is committed to taking appropriate and expeditious action in accordance with the law.” It described the inquiry as intended to be “fair, transparent, and fact-based.”
