Boeing delivered 348 commercial airplanes in 2024, 180 fewer than the 528 it delivered in 2023—a 34% year-over-year decline. The tally reflects deliveries, not orders or planes waiting in the backlog. Boeing’s annual filing describes a year shaped by regulatory scrutiny, slower 737 production, a labor stoppage and supply-chain pressures, but it does not assign the decline to any one cause.
What Boeing delivered in 2024
Boeing’s reported total covered four commercial-airplane programs. The 737 made up the largest share, with 265 deliveries. The company’s program table notes that intercompany deliveries are shown in parentheses in its presentation.

How the total compares with 2023
Boeing delivered 528 commercial airplanes in 2023 and 348 in 2024, a reduction of 180 aircraft. That is a 34% decline year over year, according to the company’s 2024 Form 10-K. The comparison is about completed deliveries; it does not by itself measure new demand or the number of aircraft Boeing had yet to deliver.

What Boeing and the FAA documented about the production environment
The decline came amid several documented pressures. Boeing’s Form 10-K says the FAA identified manufacturing quality-control non-compliance. In response, Boeing said it slowed 737 production and delayed planned rate increases. The filing also records supply-chain disruptions and labor instability; it does not quantify how much each factor contributed to the annual delivery decline.

FAA oversight after the January 2024 incident
Following the January 5, 2024 incident involving a 737-9 MAX, the FAA said it grounded 171 737-9 MAX aircraft and halted expansion of 737 MAX production. Its account of a production audit cited non-compliance issues involving manufacturing process control, parts handling and storage, and product control. In February, FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker said, “Boeing must commit to real and profound improvements.”

The 38-per-month threshold was a 2024 condition
Boeing’s filing says the FAA communicated that it would not approve 737 production-rate increases beyond 38 aircraft per month, or additional production lines, until Boeing met required quality and safety standards. This describes the condition Boeing reported in its 2024 filing; it should not be read as a statement of today’s production limit or FAA oversight status.
Labor stoppage and supply constraints
Boeing’s filing says an IAM 751 work stoppage began in September 2024, pausing production, and that production resumed in early December after contract ratification. It also identifies supply-chain disruptions and labor instability as pressures. The company presents these alongside quality-related production changes rather than attributing the full year-over-year delivery drop to any single event.

Deliveries, orders and backlog are different measures
Deliveries count aircraft handed over during the period. Net orders reflect orders after cancellations, while backlog represents work Boeing has yet to fulfill. Boeing reported 279 net orders in 2024 and a $521 billion total-company backlog, including more than 5,500 commercial airplanes. Those figures do not change the 348-aircraft delivery count, and the company-wide backlog value is not a valuation of commercial airplanes alone.

Boeing reported a $7.969 billion operating loss for its Commercial Airplanes segment in 2024. Its filing links the result to several items, including 777X and 767 reach-forward losses, 737-9 customer considerations, lower deliveries, production disruption and higher research-and-development expense. Lower abnormal production costs partly offset those items. The segment loss is a financial result, not a measure of aircraft deliveries or orders.
