Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) delivered its Indian-designed Data Link II communications system to Boeing in April 2010 for integration into India’s P-8I maritime patrol aircraft. The system was intended to exchange tactical data and messages among Indian Navy aircraft, ships and shore establishments. Contemporary reporting called it the first Indian-manufactured item delivered to Boeing for the P-8I program and said it arrived about a month ahead of schedule.
What BEL delivered to Boeing
The equipment was Data Link II, a tactical communications system designed by BEL for the P-8I program. Boeing was to install it during final assembly at its Renton, Washington, facility. The reported delivery was in April 2010, before the aircraft’s first flight. Contemporaneous reporting on the delivery described it as roughly one month ahead of schedule.
Data Link II’s stated role was to let Indian Navy aircraft, ships and shore establishments exchange tactical data and messages. Available reporting does not detail its architecture, range, data rate, encryption or operational performance, so those specifications cannot be established from the delivery announcement.
Data Link II was not the IFF interrogator
BEL also supplied a separate item for the P-8I: an Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) interrogator, reported later in 2010. The systems served different purposes. Data Link II was for tactical data and message exchange; the IFF interrogator was described as enabling the aircraft to distinguish friendly aircraft and forces. A DRDO clipping compilation and a Government of India consular commercial report describe the separate IFF delivery.

Where the 2010 delivery fits in the P-8I program
The P-8I is an Indian Navy maritime patrol aircraft based on the U.S. Navy’s P-8A and customized for India’s needs, not a commercial passenger aircraft. Boeing’s retrospective account says India contracted for eight aircraft in January 2009, with options for four more. The BEL delivery in April 2010 was an early integration milestone, preceding the P-8I’s first flight in 2011.
Boeing says the first P-8I was delivered in 2013 and deliveries were completed by 2015. Its account of the initial contract and deliveries is available in Boeing’s 2026 retrospective; the company dates the first flight to September 28, 2011, in its 2011 first-flight announcement.

Later maintenance developments are separate
Subsequent local sustainment work should not be confused with BEL’s 2010 equipment delivery. In August 2024, Boeing reported an in-country P-8I landing-gear overhaul through its partnership with Air India Engineering Services Limited (AIESL), referring to the Indian Navy’s 12-aircraft fleet. In March 2026, India’s Ministry of Defence announced a separate depot-level inspection contract with Boeing India Defense valued at ₹413 crore. These are later maintenance developments, not further details about Data Link II. See Boeing’s 2024 announcement and the Ministry of Defence’s 2026 announcement.
