12 Cheapest Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles for 2024: Prices and Trade-Offs

The cheapest 2024 plug-in hybrid in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) model-year comparison is the Toyota Prius Prime/SE, listed at $28,770 base MSRP. That figure excludes destination and delivery, options, taxes, title and licensing fees, dealer charges, incentives, and negotiated pricing. The list below uses the AFDC as a consistent comparison source; it is not a definitive ranking of every 2024 PHEV, because some manufacturer prices differ and the AFDC table omits at least one lower-priced model.

How to read these 2024 PHEV prices

“Cheapest” here means the base MSRP shown in the U.S. Department of Energy Alternative Fuels Data Center’s model-year 2024 PHEV table, before destination and delivery, options, taxes, title and licensing fees, dealer charges, incentives, or negotiated pricing. These are original model-year prices, not current used-car values or offers. The table provides a consistent starting point, but it should not be mistaken for a complete market ranking: Kia’s own pricing pages show different prices for the Niro PHEV and Sportage PHEV than the AFDC comparison suggests.

MSRP is also not the same as out-the-door cost. The IRS explains that, for vehicle-price limits under its credit rules, “The credit limitations on the price of the vehicle are based on MSRP, not the actual price you paid for the vehicle.” IRS Topic B FAQ.

12 plug-in hybrids listed from lowest to highest base MSRP

Prices and specifications below are from the AFDC’s model-year 2024 PHEV table. It includes Toyota’s standard Prius Prime and SE together in one entry. The table is ordered by the listed base MSRP; the Kia Sportage discrepancy is explained below.

What are the cheapest plug-in hybrid cars?

Toyota Prius Prime/SE — $28,770

The lowest-priced entry in the AFDC list is also the one with the longest listed electric range: 40–45 miles, depending on the Prius Prime/SE model included in the table. It is a five-seat, front-wheel-drive car. Its 52 MPG gasoline-only figure and 127 MPGe combined rating are separate measures; MPGe is not a promise of gasoline mileage when the battery is depleted. AFDC model-year 2024 table.

Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid — $38,475

The Tucson is a five-seat AWD SUV with 33 miles of electric range, 35 MPG gasoline-only fuel economy, and 80 MPGe combined. It costs $9,705 more at listed base MSRP than the Prius Prime/SE, while offering SUV packaging and all-wheel drive. AFDC model-year 2024 table.

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV — $40,345

The Outlander is the only seven-seat vehicle among the first four entries in this comparison. It is listed with 38 miles of electric range, 26 MPG gasoline-only, and 64 MPGe combined, plus 4WD. Its extra seating and drivetrain distinguish it from smaller five-seat alternatives, though the published gasoline-only figure is lower. AFDC model-year 2024 table.

Dodge Hornet PHEV AWD — $40,935

This five-seat AWD entry has 32 miles of electric range, 24 MPG gasoline-only, and 77 MPGe combined. Its base MSRP is $590 above the listed Outlander, despite seating two fewer. AFDC model-year 2024 table.

Kia Sorento Plug-in Hybrid — $45,190

The Sorento is a six-seat AWD SUV listed with 31 miles of electric range, 34 MPG gasoline-only, and 79 MPGe combined. Compared with the similarly priced Sportage entry in the AFDC table, it trades three miles of listed electric range for one additional seat. AFDC model-year 2024 table.

Kia Sportage Plug-in Hybrid — $45,190 in the AFDC table

The AFDC lists the five-seat AWD Sportage at 34 electric miles, 35 MPG gasoline-only, and 84 MPGe combined. However, Kia’s 2024 pricing page lists the X-Line at $39,590 and X-Line Prestige at $44,090. Those manufacturer trim prices do not match the AFDC table’s $45,190 entry, so buyers comparing actual trims should verify the original sticker and included charges rather than treating either figure as a universal price. Kia 2024 Sportage PHEV pricing; AFDC model-year 2024 table.

BMW 330e Sedan — $45,600

The five-seat rear-wheel-drive sedan is listed with 22 miles of electric range, 28 MPG gasoline-only, and 75 MPGe combined. The similarly named 330e xDrive costs more and has a different drivetrain and range. AFDC model-year 2024 table.

Which plug-in hybrid has the longest electric range for the price?

Among the 12 AFDC entries above, the Prius Prime/SE leads both on listed electric range (40–45 miles) and base MSRP ($28,770). That makes it the strongest on-paper choice if the priorities are low starting MSRP and long electric range, but it is not a like-for-like substitute for an AWD SUV, minivan, or seven-seat vehicle. The Lexus NX 450h+ is next by electric range at 37 miles, while the Outlander is listed at 38 miles and provides seven seats at a lower base MSRP than the Lexus.

Range figures are EPA-style published specifications for the model-year table, not a guarantee of daily distance. Temperature, speed, terrain, climate-control use, battery condition, and driving style can affect real-world range. A PHEV’s advantage is most useful when the driver can charge regularly and many trips fit within its electric range.

How to compare the real cost and fit

  • Match the body and seating first. A seven-seat SUV or minivan solves a different problem from a compact sedan. Check the exact configuration and trim, not just the model name.
  • Compare the right efficiency figure. Gasoline-only MPG describes operation without relying on the plug-in charge; combined MPGe combines electrical and gasoline energy into an equivalent measure. They answer different questions.
  • Check charging details. The AFDC table also provides charging rates and battery specifications. A Level 2 home charger can make routine charging more convenient, but installation suitability depends on the home’s electrical capacity and the vehicle’s charging capability.
  • Estimate operating costs locally. Electricity rates, gasoline prices, commute length, and charging frequency determine whether a PHEV’s energy savings offset a higher purchase price. DOE’s Vehicle Cost Calculator can help compare operating-cost assumptions.
  • Build an out-the-door estimate. Add destination and delivery, options, taxes, title and registration, dealer charges, and any verified incentives. The base MSRP alone is not a transaction quote.

Why the 12-car ranking is not definitive

The AFDC comparison offers a common specification and base-price reference, but it does not include the 2024 Kia Niro PHEV, whose manufacturer pricing page lists the EX at $34,390 and SX Touring at $40,140. The Niro could alter which vehicles qualify as the 12 least expensive, depending on how trims and included charges are compared. Kia 2024 Niro PHEV pricing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Sportage figures also demonstrate why a precise rank requires reconciling source, trim, and destination treatment. Kia’s pricing page lists its 2024 X-Line and X-Line Prestige at different prices from the AFDC table. The list here therefore ranks the AFDC’s reported entries rather than claiming to establish the definitive 12 least expensive PHEVs sold in the U.S. for model year 2024.

Are federal tax credits part of the 2024 price comparison?

No. The figures above are MSRP before incentives. The IRS’s current New Clean Vehicle Credit page says the vehicle had to be acquired on or before September 30, 2025 to qualify under that program’s rules; that deadline has passed as of October 8, 2026. Treat the credit as historical context for a 2024 purchase, not as a current discount on a new-car purchase. IRS New Clean Vehicle Credit. State, local, utility, lease, and used-vehicle programs depend on location and transaction details and are not established by these model-year prices.
