Amazon has not publicly admitted that extensive AI use caused widespread outages. A March 10, 2026, Futurism story relayed Financial Times reporting about retail-service incidents and a meeting note that reportedly cited AI-assisted changes as a contributing factor. Amazon disputed the broader implication: it said one incident involved an engineer following inaccurate advice inferred by an AI tool from an outdated internal wiki, and that none involved AI-written code.
What was reported about Amazon’s retail outages?
Futurism’s March 10, 2026, article relayed Financial Times reporting that Amazon convened engineers to discuss recent outages affecting its online retail business. According to the account, a meeting briefing note described a “trend of incidents” with “high blast radius” and “Gen-AI assisted changes.” It reportedly listed “novel GenAI usage for which best practices and safeguards are not yet fully established” as a contributing factor. Futurism’s report is the source for these quotations; the underlying internal note and full Financial Times coverage were not directly available in the material reviewed.
Futurism also attributed an employee email to Dave Treadwell, then identified as a senior vice-president at Amazon’s eCommerce Services. As relayed by the outlet, he wrote: “Folks, as you likely know, the availability of the site and related infrastructure has not been good recently,”
What did Amazon say about AI and the retail incidents?
In its public response, Amazon said: “Only one of the incidents involved AI-assisted tooling, which related to an engineer following inaccurate advice that an AI tool inferred from an outdated internal wiki, and none involved AI-written code.” Amazon’s response is the company’s account of the incident, not an independent audit of its causes.

The distinction matters. AI-assisted advice is not the same as AI generating code, and the company described a human engineer acting on advice drawn from outdated internal documentation. The reported briefing note and Amazon’s response therefore present different emphases: the note, as reported, identified AI-assisted changes among contributing factors, while Amazon said only one incident involved AI-assisted tooling and described the mechanism as inaccurate advice.
Was Amazon’s Kiro AI coding tool responsible for an AWS outage?
The retail reports and a separate AWS event should not be conflated. In its response to reporting about AWS and Kiro, Amazon said a brief December interruption affected AWS Cost Explorer in one of AWS’s 39 geographic regions. The company attributed it to a misconfigured role and access controls, and said it did not affect compute, storage, databases, AI technologies, or other services. Amazon also denied the Financial Times’ claim that a second event impacted AWS. Amazon’s AWS response represents the company’s account; the underlying internal incident record was not available in the sources reviewed.

Amazon characterized the access-control issue as one that could arise through any developer tool or manual action, not just an AI-powered tool. It said it added safeguards, including mandatory peer review for production access. Those are company-reported steps, not independently verified findings about how consistently the safeguards are applied.
What does the evidence establish—and what does it not?
- Established as public reporting: Futurism relayed the Financial Times’ account of an Amazon retail engineering meeting and quoted language attributed to a briefing note.
- Established as Amazon’s position: the company said one retail incident involved AI-assisted tooling, none involved AI-written code, and the relevant advice was inferred from an outdated internal wiki.
- Not established by the available accounts: that extensive AI use caused Amazon’s outages, that AI-generated code took down retail services or AWS, or that there is a measured company-wide causal trend.
- Still unclear: the precise date and incident-by-incident mapping for the reported retail briefing, since the original note and complete Financial Times articles were not directly available.
The available sources do not provide a reliable independent statistic measuring how many Amazon outages were caused by AI coding tools. The reported meeting language and Amazon’s response are competing accounts, not an independent causal investigation.

Why is Amazon still investing heavily in AI?
Amazon’s outage statements sit alongside a strong public commitment to AI as a business opportunity. In his 2025 shareholder letter, published in 2026, CEO Andy Jassy described AWS offerings including SageMaker, Bedrock, Trainium, Strands, AgentCore, Kiro, Transform, and Quick. The letter stated that “AWS’s AI revenue run rate is over $15 billion in Q1 2026.” The shareholder letter is company-reported strategy and performance context; it does not establish what caused any outage.
For readers assessing the business story, the two points can coexist: Amazon is pursuing AI as a significant growth area, while public accounts of specific service incidents remain disputed and do not show that broad AI adoption caused the outages.
