Those figures are not like-for-like quotes for all ten models: size, age, mileage, engine, condition and service history change the price substantially. The list is a practical shortlist, not a claim that every model is cheap to buy or own.
Use the smaller Q5, X3, GLC and Macan as one comparison group, and the larger Q7, X5, GLE, Cayenne and Touareg as another. A low asking price can be offset by repairs, tires, brakes, fuel and taxes, so compare the specific vehicle and its records before deciding.
What “cheap” means for this shortlist
This article uses Germany as its market because the available price and inspection evidence is German. AUTO BILD’s June 22, 2026 overview gives indicative starting prices for two older large SUVs, while other sources provide model rankings or inspection data rather than comparable asking prices for all ten. Do not treat those starting figures as current quotes, or compare them directly with prices in another country.
All ten are editorially selected candidates, not a published ranking of the ten cheapest German SUVs. iSeeCars’ scores below come from its own methodology, which combines data from more than 12 million new and used vehicles in longevity and five-year depreciation studies with NHTSA safety ratings. The scores are useful context, not a guarantee of reliability or a head-to-head road test.

Compact luxury crossovers
These four are the more natural starting point if you want a luxury cabin and engaging driving in a smaller footprint. They are not identical in space or running costs, and performance versions should be assessed by their exact engine and condition.
Audi Q5
The Q5 is a sensible all-rounder to include in a compact-SUV search. iSeeCars gives it 8.1/10 in its 2026 German luxury small-SUV category, tied with the BMW X3. AUTO BILD’s TÜV-report summary says the Q5 is among the best SUVs in almost all age classes; that broad statement does not replace checking the particular car’s inspection results and service history.
BMW X3
The X3 is another compact option with a sporty image and an 8.1/10 iSeeCars quality score in the same 2026 category. AUTO BILD’s cited TÜV summary reports a 25.9% significant-defect rate for its 12-to-13-year-old BMW X3/X4 cohort. That is an age-group inspection statistic, not a prediction about a specific X3; have an older example assessed independently.

Mercedes-Benz GLC
The GLC leads the iSeeCars 2026 German luxury small-SUV category with a quality score of 8.5/10. That makes it a worthwhile comparison candidate, not proof it will be cheaper to maintain than its rivals. Compare year, mileage, equipment and documented maintenance rather than using the score as a purchase verdict.
Porsche Macan
The Macan combines the compact-SUV format with Porsche’s performance positioning. iSeeCars scores it 7.8/10 in the same 2026 category, below the GLC, Q5 and X3 in that ranking. Treat the score as one publisher’s measure; the available evidence does not establish comparable acceleration or ownership costs across these models.
Larger SUVs with more room
These five bring more space or a larger-vehicle feel, but they should not be judged against compact crossovers as if they served the same needs. Their size and specification can affect fuel, tire and repair bills; the lowest purchase price alone does not establish the lowest total cost.

Audi Q7
The Q7 is the larger Audi choice in this list for buyers who need a roomier SUV than the Q5. The available sources identify it as a candidate but do not provide a comparable current used price, reliability rate or performance figure. Evaluate the exact year, engine, seating configuration and service record of each listing.
BMW X5
The X5 offers a larger alternative to the X3. AUTO BILD’s June 2026 German guide lists the F15 generation (2013–2018) at 218–575 PS, with used examples starting at about €23,000 and mileage up to 200,000 km. These are guide figures for that market snapshot, not a transaction-price guarantee.

AUTO BILD says the 3.0-liter diesel six-cylinder was a popular F15 choice and reports crankshaft-bearing damage occurring more often after 150,000 km on the N57D30. Treat that as a reason to scrutinize maintenance records and arrange a specialist inspection, not as a defect certain to occur in every vehicle. TÜV figures also merit context: AUTO BILD’s cited summary gives a 23.2% significant-defect rate for its 12-to-13-year-old BMW X5/X6 cohort.

Mercedes-Benz GLE
The GLE is the larger Mercedes option here. AUTO BILD’s cited TÜV-report summary lists a 19.3% significant-defect rate for its 12-to-13-year-old Mercedes GLE/ML cohort. The grouping includes the ML name used by earlier vehicles, and the rate describes that age cohort rather than an individual GLE. Check the specific car’s inspection history and condition.
Porsche Cayenne
The Cayenne is the large Porsche SUV in this shortlist. It may appeal to buyers seeking a sportier character in a bigger vehicle, but the available evidence does not support a comparable price, acceleration, or ownership-cost figure against the other nine. Verify the precise engine and specification, then price likely maintenance and repairs before treating an attractive listing as a bargain.
Volkswagen Touareg
The Touareg can offer a large-SUV format without a luxury-brand badge. AUTO BILD’s June 2026 German guide describes the 7P generation (2010–2018) at 204–380 PS, with examples from about €15,000 and mileage up to 200,000 km. The guide’s price and power range describe that generation and snapshot, not every Touareg or a guaranteed deal.

AUTO BILD flags injector problems on V6 diesels through 2014 and failures in the high-pressure fuel-pump system. Starting trouble or uneven running can be warning signs of common-rail fuel-system issues. The guide also cautions that frequent towing may increase wear. Use these as inspection leads and ask for evidence of repairs and maintenance.

- Set the market and total budget. Compare local asking prices in the same country and include taxes, registration, inspection and any immediate maintenance. The German price examples above cannot be directly merged with dollar-based US rankings.
- Choose the size before the badge. Compare Q5, X3, GLC and Macan with one another, then assess Q7, X5, GLE, Cayenne and Touareg as larger alternatives. Check seating and cargo needs against the actual vehicle.
- Identify the exact vehicle. Record model year, engine, trim and VIN. ADAC lists the BMW X5 F15/F85 as 2013–2018 and G05/F95 as 2018–2023; it says the second-generation Audi Q5 arrived in 2017. Generation matters when checking service records, recalls and parts fitment.
- Read the records before negotiating. Ask for service invoices, inspection reports and documentation for major repairs. Match records to the VIN and investigate recalls for the car’s market; the evidence summarized here does not establish the current recall status of any individual vehicle.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Have a qualified inspector assess mechanical condition and scan for faults. For an X5 F15 N57 diesel or a Touareg 7P V6 diesel through 2014, explicitly ask the inspector to consider the concerns noted above.
- Estimate ownership exposure. Get quotes for insurance, fuel, tires, brakes and likely repairs for the exact engine and specification. A cheap listing with incomplete history or unresolved faults may be a poor value even if its asking price is low.
How to read the reliability and inspection evidence
The figures in this guide answer different questions. iSeeCars’ 2026 small-SUV quality scores are its own cross-model ranking; TÜV defect rates concern German inspections of specific age cohorts; AUTO BILD’s fault reports concern particular generations, engines or mileage; and ADAC’s pages establish model chronology. None proves that a specific used SUV will be reliable or inexpensive to own.
For reference, AUTO BILD’s cited TÜV-report summary lists significant-defect rates in its 12-to-13-year age band of 17.9% for the VW Touareg, 19.3% for Mercedes GLE/ML, 23.2% for BMW X5/X6 and 25.9% for BMW X3/X4. These are not directly comparable to a buyer’s odds of having a breakdown, and the available summary does not establish a clear report publication year. Use them as context for older cohorts, not as a substitute for examining the vehicle.
