Pomelo’s $35M Series A: How Its “Send Now, Pay Later” Remittance Service Worked

Pomelo’s 2024 funding announcement paired a $35 million equity round with a separate warehouse facility expansion and spotlighted its credit-linked U.S.-to-Philippines remittance service.

Pomelo announced a $35 million Series A led by Vy Capital on April 22, 2024, with Founders Fund, A* Capital, Afore Capital and other investors participating, according to TechCrunch’s report. The company also disclosed a separate $75 million expansion of its warehouse facility. Its remittance product combined U.S.-to-Philippines transfers with credit; the announcement described historical terms and does not establish what Pomelo offers today.

What Pomelo announced in April 2024

TechCrunch reported that the Series A brought Pomelo’s total equity raised to $55 million. Separately, the $75 million warehouse facility expansion brought the facility to $125 million, according to the same April 22, 2024 report. Equity funding and a warehouse facility are different kinds of financing: the reported $35 million was an equity round, while the facility expansion was disclosed separately.

The round was led by Dubai-based Vy Capital. Founders Fund, A* Capital, Afore Capital and other investors also participated. These figures and investor details are those reported by TechCrunch; no separate company or investor announcement is established here.

What “send now, pay later” meant for Pomelo

TechCrunch said Pomelo launched in 2022 to let people in the United States send money to family in the Philippines while building credit. The company worked with Mastercard, and the report described its proposition as “send now, pay later”: credit was part of how a sender could fund a remittance, rather than the transfer being presented solely as a conventional cash-funded payment.

In the 2024 account, recipients could receive funds through cards, and Pomelo had also added an option to send to GCash. The report described accounts that let the account creator set limits, pause cards and view spending. These are historical product details, not confirmation of present-day availability or features.

Credit options and reported 2024 terms

TechCrunch described two credit structures. A secured line was backed by a deposit; an unsecured line did not require that deposit. The report said unsecured customers could transfer up to $1,000 per month. CEO Eric Velasquez Frenkiel told TechCrunch the service charged a late fee when a customer could not pay and described the product as having no interest. These terms reflect the report published April 22, 2024, not verified current pricing or eligibility.

That distinction matters for a personal-finance decision: a secured line ties up a deposit, while an unsecured line involves borrowing without that collateral. Neither label alone establishes the total cost or suitability of a service. The report does not give current fee schedules, exchange rates or enough detail to compare the full cost of sending money with alternatives.

How Pomelo said it made money—and where it planned to expand

According to TechCrunch, Pomelo earned most of its revenue from interchange, with foreign exchange as a smaller component. The company said the new capital would support product and market expansion and identified Mexico as its next target country. That was a stated target in April 2024, not evidence that Pomelo subsequently launched a Mexico corridor.

Velasquez Frenkiel told TechCrunch that “Mexico is certainly the largest corridor for the United States — something close to $40 billion is sent over to Mexico every year.” That is the CEO’s quoted estimate in the 2024 article, not an independently verified or current market statistic. Investor Keith Rabois, quoted in a written statement, said: “Pomelo stands out through a fundamentally different approach to remittance transfer by using credit as its foundation.”

What the funding says—and does not say

The financing announcement established that Pomelo reported a $35 million Series A and a separate warehouse facility expansion in 2024. It also outlined the company’s then-described credit-linked remittance model and expansion ambitions. It does not establish Pomelo’s current operating status, current customer eligibility, active transfer destinations, present-day fees or whether the proposed Mexico expansion occurred.
