How to Insure a FedEx Package: Declared Value vs. Insurance

FedEx declared value raises a potential liability limit but does not guarantee reimbursement. Compare it with separate parcel insurance and learn the label and claim steps.

FedEx does not insure packages through its declared-value option. Declared value raises the maximum amount FedEx may be liable for under its terms; it does not guarantee reimbursement. For broader protection, ask an insurance agent or broker about a separate parcel policy and check its terms before shipping.

FedEx declared value is not insurance

FedEx describes declared value as its maximum liability in connection with a package, subject to its shipping terms. Its U.S. Service Guide calls the provision “Declared value and limits of liability (not insurance coverage),” and FedEx’s glossary says it does not provide insurance coverage. The standard U.S. package liability limit is generally $100 unless a higher amount is declared at tender and the applicable charge is paid; service and shipment conditions apply. See FedEx’s declared-value explanation and the 2026 Service Guide preview.

A declared amount is not a promise that FedEx will pay that amount. You must file a claim and document the actual loss or damage. FedEx investigates liability, and its stated reimbursement is limited to repair cost, depreciated value, or replacement cost, whichever is less. FedEx also says the cause must be determined to result from its negligence, and proper packaging matters. Prohibited items and commodity-specific restrictions may limit recovery.

How to add declared value when creating a FedEx label

  1. Sign in to your FedEx account and start creating a shipment.
  2. Enter the package weight, service type, and package type.
  3. In Package & Shipment Details, enter the declared amount. FedEx says it should reflect the total cost to repair or replace the shipped items.
  4. Calculate the shipment’s total cost and review the declared-value fee before completing the shipment. FedEx says the first $100 is included in the standard limit for the U.S. parcel services covered by its page; charges apply above that amount, and fees depend on the declared amount and service.

FedEx says many shipping methods allow a declared amount up to $50,000, but this is not a universal limit. The 2026 Service Guide preview lists that per-package ceiling for several U.S. parcel services, with other restrictions. Some services and items—including artwork, jewelry, antiques, and fragile or restricted goods—may have lower limits or exclusions. Check the current Service Guide for the exact service and commodity before choosing an amount.

Accuteck 8250 High Accuracy Digital Shipping Scale and Postal Scale, 0.1oz Precision, 50Lb
  • Accurate to 0.1oz: High precision for postage, packaging, or food preparation.
  • Solid design with high weight limit: 50Lbs
  • Smart Tare & Hold Functions: Effortlessly subtract container weight or lock readings for larger boxes.
  • Clear LCD Display: Large, backlit screen makes weights easy to read, even in dim rooms.

FedEx also says a declared value of $500 or more on specified U.S. and Canada shipments automatically triggers Direct Signature Required under the conditions on its declared-value page. That is a delivery-signature feature, not insurance; confirm whether it applies to your shipment and service.

When separate parcel insurance may fit better

If you want protection that is not limited to FedEx’s liability terms, contact an insurance agent, broker, or insurer about a separate parcel policy. FedEx’s general comparison describes insurance as potentially covering a shipment door to door and paying regardless of whether the loss or damage resulted from FedEx negligence, with reimbursement potentially reflecting the shipment’s full value plus shipping costs. That is not a guarantee about every policy: coverage, exclusions, valuation, and claim requirements depend on the contract.

Question FedEx declared value Separate parcel insurance
Who provides it? FedEx, as part of the shipping transaction. An insurer, insurance agent, or broker.
What does it change? FedEx’s maximum liability, subject to its terms and proof of loss. The coverage specified in the policy.
Does it guarantee payment of the stated value? No. FedEx investigates and limits reimbursement according to actual loss and its terms. Not necessarily. Policy conditions, valuation rules, proof requirements, and exclusions apply.
What should you check? Service eligibility, maximums, item restrictions, added fee, and claim conditions. Covered events, exclusions, valuation method, shipping-cost treatment, deductible, and claim deadlines.

For high-value or unusual goods, confirm that the item and route are eligible before tendering the package. FedEx describes a Declared Value Advantage option for eligible specialty jewelry shipments, with limits of up to $100,000 domestically and $25,000 to select international destinations; those figures do not apply to general merchandise. Verify the shipment’s eligibility and current conditions directly with FedEx.

How to file a FedEx claim

  1. Keep the item and packaging, if possible. Photograph the damage and package condition.
  2. Gather the tracking number and evidence of the contents’ value, such as a receipt or other purchase documentation.
  3. File a written claim through the FedEx claims page, which supports online filing and claim-status tracking.
  4. Provide the requested documentation and respond to follow-up requests while FedEx investigates the shipment and its liability.
  5. If the claim is approved, FedEx says payment can be sent by check or electronic funds transfer, depending on the option selected when filing.

FedEx’s claims page, accessed October 8, 2026, lists these filing deadlines:

Pack carefully and keep your records

Declared value or a separate policy does not make poor packing acceptable. FedEx says improper packaging may affect liability for damage. Use packaging appropriate to the item, protect it against movement and impact, and keep receipts, photographs, and shipment records in case you need to support a claim. Packing supplies help protect the contents; they are not insurance and do not guarantee a claim will be paid.
