A parent or legal guardian can request a new IRS Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) for a child under 18 online using Form 15227. The IRS will contact the adult using the phone number on the form to verify identity. If that online route is not possible, schedule an appointment at a Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC). If your child already has an IP PIN and you need it again, do not submit Form 15227: call the IRS instead.
Request a new IP PIN for your child
The IRS says a parent or guardian may submit Form 15227 online for a dependent under 18. The form is also an option for a dependent who cannot set up an ID.me account. After submission, the IRS uses the adult’s phone number on the form to verify the adult’s identity before issuing a PIN. See the IRS IP PIN FAQ and the Form 15227 instructions.
- Complete and submit Form 15227 online as the child’s parent or legal guardian.
- Answer the IRS identity-verification contact using the phone number provided on the form.
- Follow the IRS’s instructions for receiving the new PIN.
The IRS sources do not state a universal processing time for a new Form 15227 request, so do not rely on the 21-day estimate for reissued PINs; that estimate applies to recovery of an already assigned PIN after identity verification.
Use a Taxpayer Assistance Center if you cannot request online
If the online request is not possible, call 844-545-5640 to schedule an appointment at a local Taxpayer Assistance Center. Bring identity-verification documents for yourself and two IRS-listed documents for your child. The IRS says proof of legal guardianship may also be required.

Documents for the child
Examples of documents the IRS lists include a birth certificate showing the name at birth, date and city of birth; Social Security card; passport; bank statements; student records; an approved copy of Form 4029; or a health-care-provider letter meeting IRS specifications. Check the IRS’s IP PIN FAQ for the applicable document details.
Does the child need to attend?
No. The IRS Internal Revenue Manual says the dependent does not need to be present at the appointment; the adult must provide documentation for both the adult and child. See the Internal Revenue Manual.

If your child already has an IP PIN
A minor dependent’s existing IP PIN cannot be retrieved online. Call the IRS at 800-908-4490. If you verify your identity, the IRS says it will mail the reissued PIN to the address of record within 21 days. That timing is for a reissue, not a new Form 15227 application. See Retrieve your IP PIN.
Do not submit Form 15227 to recover a PIN already assigned to your child. The form is for a new request to enroll, and the current instructions say not to file it if a PIN has already been assigned.

When your child’s PIN is needed on a tax return
An IP PIN is a six-digit IRS number that helps prevent someone from using a taxpayer’s Social Security number on a fraudulent federal return. The IRS generates a new PIN each year. A dependent does not need one unless the IRS previously issued one to that dependent.
When e-filing, enter the dependent’s IP PIN on the applicable Form 1040-series return and, when relevant, Form 2441 and the Schedule for Earned Income Credit. The IRS warns that an e-filed return may be rejected if a required dependent PIN is omitted. For a paper return, the dependent’s PIN does not need to be entered. Details are in the IRS IP PIN FAQ.
