But those strategic ideas did not guarantee reliable production, sales or cash generation. The six “rights” and four “wrongs” below are an analytical framework, not an official ranking or a claim that any one factor caused the bankruptcy.
What Fisker got right on paper
Some of these points describe strategic choices, not verified commercial successes. The available company and court records directly document the manufacturing relationship and the rationale for changing sales channels; they do not establish that every product or customer strategy worked as intended.
1. It pursued an electric SUV concept
The Ocean gave Fisker a defined product proposition in the electric-vehicle market: an electric SUV rather than an attempt to launch a broad lineup at once. That is a coherent place to focus a new automaker’s resources. The records cited here do not, however, establish how well the Ocean’s design or performance was received by customers.
2. It avoided building its own full-scale vehicle factory
Fisker contracted with Magna Steyr in 2021 to launch and manufacture the Ocean, as its 2022 Form 10-K records. Using an outside manufacturer can reduce the need to fund and operate a factory network from scratch, an appealing approach for a company with limited capital. It also means relying on a partner for a central part of execution.

3. It sought established manufacturing expertise
Contracting with Magna Steyr was not simply a way to avoid building a factory: it also gave Fisker access to an experienced manufacturing partner. That could help a new automaker turn a vehicle program into production. The agreement itself does not prove that manufacturing, quality control or delivery targets were achieved consistently.
4. It centered the business on a specific product proposition
A single flagship vehicle can concentrate engineering, marketing and launch attention. For Fisker, that proposition was the Ocean. Treating a focused launch as a strategic advantage is an assessment, not evidence that the Ocean achieved lasting product-market fit or stood out successfully to buyers.

5. It initially pursued direct sales
Direct sales can give an automaker more control over the customer relationship and its sales process. That is a plausible strategic rationale for a new brand, but the cited records do not quantify whether Fisker’s direct approach improved customer reach, service or sales.
6. It tried to widen distribution with dealers
Fisker’s Chapter 11 disclosure says the company adopted a hybrid direct-and-dealer approach in the hope of reaching more markets and accelerating Ocean sales. That is the company’s stated rationale, not proof the channel shift delivered those results. The approach recognized that a direct model might not provide sufficient reach on its own.

Four execution risks that contributed to the failure
These are risks and pressures visible in the record, not a definitive causal ranking. Bankruptcy followed a combination of business difficulties; the cited documents do not establish that any single one caused it.
1. Outsourcing production did not remove execution risk
Using a contract manufacturer reduced Fisker’s need to build its own factory, but it did not eliminate the need to coordinate production, quality, deliveries and cash. Magna reported that its Ocean manufacturing agreement was terminated in the third quarter of 2024 in a later SEC filing. That termination is a significant sign of the breakdown in the manufacturing relationship; it does not, on its own, explain every cause of Fisker’s bankruptcy.

2. The sales-channel change came amid a fragile launch
A hybrid model might have expanded reach, as Fisker said it hoped. But changing how customers find and buy a vehicle also adds operational complexity: a company must support its direct operation while coordinating with dealers. The debtor disclosure documents the strategy and its intended benefits, not proof that the shift was executed successfully.
3. Production, deliveries and cash generation had to work together
An automaker needs more than a manufacturable vehicle: it must move production into delivered sales and collect enough cash to sustain operations. Fisker’s Chapter 11 filing shows that the business did not remain financially viable, but the sources cited here do not provide a complete, verified breakdown of how much each stage contributed. The production-to-cash gap is therefore best understood as an execution risk, not a separately established single cause.

4. Safety-related software issues created additional pressure
Two separate NHTSA records matter, and they should not be conflated:
- Brake-module recall: NHTSA’s recall notice for 2023 and 2024 Ocean vehicles describes a brake-module software issue associated with braking feel and an over-the-air software remedy, OS 2.2.
- Automatic emergency braking investigation: In May 2024, NHTSA opened a preliminary evaluation after complaints alleging inadvertent automatic emergency braking in 2023 Oceans. The opening PE24013 resume recorded eight complaints and one injury incident at that stage. Those are opening-stage complaint and incident counts, not a final finding or a rate among all Ocean owners.
A recall and a preliminary investigation are different regulatory actions, and neither supports a blanket claim that every Ocean had the same problem. Owners should check recall status by VIN and follow qualified service guidance; these records do not establish current parts availability or ongoing software-support coverage.

Fisker debtors commenced U.S. Chapter 11 cases in June 2024, according to the company’s SEC filing. The case did not remain an ordinary reorganization: the case administrator later reported that the court confirmed a joint Chapter 11 plan of liquidation in October 2024. The case administrator’s page provides the case milestones.
The sequence captures the difference between an appealing strategy and a successful operating business. Contract manufacturing and a wider sales channel could address real startup constraints, but they could not guarantee execution, durable sales or financial stability. The record supports treating these choices and pressures as part of Fisker’s story—not as a settled claim that four specific mistakes alone sent the company into bankruptcy.
