A cup described as stainless steel may still have plastic components. Simple Modern, for example, describes its Voyager vessel as stainless steel, while its lid and straws are BPA-free plastic (Simple Modern Voyager). KeepCup’s cold-cup family spans tempered glass, insulated steel, double-wall glass, and recycled Tritan, with replaceable lids and straws (KeepCup). S’well’s Glass+ uses borosilicate glass, stainless steel, and silicone components (S’well Glass+). Consider the entire assembly if you are avoiding a particular material.
Match the seal to how you travel
“Splash-proof,” “spillproof,” and “leakproof” are not interchangeable. Klean Kanteen describes its children’s cup as splash-proof and explicitly says it is not leakproof. KeepCup calls the Thermal cold cup’s lid spillproof, while S’well describes the Glass+ straw cap as leakproof. These are manufacturer descriptions, not results from an independent comparison. The current KeepCup cold-cup page also says its plastic range uses about as much plastic as 20 disposable cups and lids (KeepCup). That, too, is a company-reported comparison. In practice, a cup’s lifespan, washing, material production, and use of replacement parts all matter; the available figures do not establish a universal lifecycle ranking.
