Yes, you can make money with Instagram Reels, but Instagram does not guarantee every creator a fixed payment for each view. Reels can help you earn through viewer Gifts, subscriptions, brand partnerships, affiliate commissions, or a Meta bonus or ad-related offer if one is available to your account. Which options you can use depends on eligibility, location, account standing, and—in some cases—an invitation.
Does Instagram pay you for Reels views?
There is no universal Instagram Reels rate per view established by the cited Meta announcements. Meta described limited performance-based payout tests in select markets in 2023, then announced invite-only bonuses. Those historical programs do not establish a current, generally available payment or a reliable amount per 1,000 or 1 million views. See Meta’s May 2023 Reels ads announcement and November 2023 monetization announcement, updated through April 2024.
If Meta offers a bonus or other payout program to your account, review the offer in your Instagram Professional Dashboard and read its terms. Do not treat past tests or another creator’s reported earnings as a promise of what your views will earn.

Gifts from viewers
Instagram Gifts let viewers buy Stars and send virtual gifts to creators on Reels. Meta’s April 2024 update listed a professional account, age 18 or older, compliance with Partner Monetization Policies, and at least 5,000 followers among the eligibility conditions. Country availability also applies. Those are dated conditions, not a guarantee that the feature is currently open to every account meeting them; check the current requirements in your Professional Dashboard. Meta’s announcement also reported more than 1 million active subscriptions to creators through Instagram at the time of its 2023 announcement, updated April 2024. That is a historical platform-reported count, not a current total or an earnings forecast.

Subscriptions
Subscriptions let eligible creators offer exclusive content and experiences in exchange for recurring support. A Reel can help potential subscribers discover what you make, but it does not itself activate the feature or persuade viewers to subscribe. Meta describes subscriptions as a way creators can earn recurring income; actual earnings depend on access and whether followers choose to pay.
Brand partnerships
A brand may pay you to feature or discuss a product in a Reel, or work with you through branded content and partnership ads. The amount and terms come from the commercial agreement; there is no standard payout implied by a view count. Audience fit and the terms you negotiate matter more than treating reach as guaranteed income.

Affiliate commissions
An affiliate program may pay a commission when someone buys through your qualifying link. The commission depends on the program’s rules and resulting purchases, not simply on how many people watch a Reel. Meta has announced creator-shopping and affiliate tools historically, but that does not establish that a native Instagram affiliate feature is currently available to every creator.
Bonuses and ad-related offers
Meta’s 2023 announcements described performance-based Reels payout tests in select markets and invite-only bonuses. They are evidence that some creators have had access to particular offers—not that Instagram currently pays all creators for views. If you see an offer in your Professional Dashboard, check who qualifies, how the payout is calculated, the offer period, and any other terms before relying on it.

How many followers do you need to make money on Reels?
There is no single follower threshold for every way of earning. Meta’s April 2024 Gifts update listed at least 5,000 followers as one eligibility condition, alongside other account and policy requirements. That figure applies to the cited Gifts announcement; it is not a universal threshold for brand deals, affiliate commissions, subscriptions, or every possible Meta offer. Requirements and availability can vary, so verify the options shown for your account in the Professional Dashboard.
What to check before counting on Reels income
- Account-specific availability: Open your Instagram Professional Dashboard and look for the monetization options and offers available to you. Eligibility and country access can change.
- The payment trigger: Confirm whether money comes from a viewer gift, a recurring subscription, a brand contract, a qualifying purchase, or a specific Meta offer.
- The terms: For a platform program, read its eligibility, calculation, timing, and other conditions. For a brand or affiliate arrangement, confirm the deliverables, payment terms, and commission rules.
- Disclosure: If you receive payment, a product, another benefit, or a commission for an endorsement, disclose that connection clearly. U.S. Federal Trade Commission guidance says disclosures should be hard to miss and close to the endorsement; for a video endorsement, include the disclosure in the video rather than relying only on the caption. Do not confuse Facebook Reels payouts with Instagram earnings
Meta reported nearly $3 billion in creator payments on Facebook in 2025 and said 60% of Facebook’s total creator payout went to Reels. Those figures refer to Facebook, not Instagram, and should not be used to estimate what Instagram Reels might pay. Meta’s March 2026 announcement is specifically about Facebook creator payments.
