Cash App’s terms say customers can direct payments to their Cash App Balance using the routing and account numbers provided through its direct deposit program. That does not guarantee that every Cash App account can receive every tax refund. How to enter Cash App direct deposit details on your return
- Find your direct deposit details in Cash App. Use the routing number and account number provided for direct deposit. Do not use the number printed on your Cash App debit card; a card number may differ from the account number the IRS needs.
- Check that the account can receive the refund. Confirm with Cash App that your account type is eligible and that the deposit will be accepted.
- Enter the details carefully in the federal refund section of your tax return. Check each digit against the numbers in your app before filing.
- Use an account in an eligible owner’s name. IRS guidance says the destination should be in the taxpayer’s name, the spouse’s name, or both names for a joint account.
If the bank details are wrong, the deposit may be rejected, potentially resulting in a paper check or an IRS notice. If the money is accepted into someone else’s account, you may need to work directly with that financial institution to recover it. The IRS refund FAQ covers these risks.

Cash App versus other refund destinations
Cash App is one possible destination, not a requirement. You can compare it with a bank or credit union account, another eligible payment app or prepaid debit card, or a paper check where available.
