Whether you qualify depends on what you booked, who canceled it, and the terms attached to the reservation. U.S. Department of Transportation rules can also give passengers a refund right for certain airline cancellations or significant changes—but those rules do not apply to hotel, rental-car, cruise, or package bookings as a whole.
How do I request a refund from Expedia?
- Find the reservation. Sign in to Expedia and open the trip, or use the Help Center’s relevant topic: “Refund basics,” “Cancel your flight,” or “Cancel your hotel or vacation rental booking.” Expedia also lists help for packages, cars, cruises, and other services. The available options depend on the booking.
- Read the terms before canceling. Check whether the fare, room, rental, or other service is refundable, whether a cancellation deadline applies, and whether the supplier offers a refund or only a credit. Do not assume that canceling automatically returns the full amount.
- Submit the cancellation or refund request through the reservation or Help Center. Follow the options shown for that booking and save the confirmation, case number, and any messages from Expedia or the supplier.
- Check the refund status and payment method. Confirm whether the request is approved and whether the refund is being returned to the original payment method or issued as a credit. Timing varies by booking and applicable rules; the flight deadlines below are not a general Expedia timeline.
Start with Expedia rather than contacting a supplier when the reservation was made through Expedia and you need an eligible U.S.-covered airline refund. The DOT advises travelers who bought a ticket through an online travel agency to contact the travel agent directly before the airline.
Can I get a refund if I cancel my own booking?
Possibly. A voluntary cancellation is governed by the terms for that particular fare, property, rental, cruise, or package. A refundable booking may allow money back; a nonrefundable booking may instead have a cancellation fee, no refund, or a supplier-specific exception. Review the terms displayed for your reservation before submitting a cancellation, since one supplier’s policy cannot be assumed to apply to another Expedia booking.
What if the airline canceled or significantly changed my flight?
For flights covered by U.S. Department of Transportation rules, a passenger may be entitled to a refund when an airline cancels the flight or makes a significant change and the passenger declines to travel or accept an alternative such as a replacement itinerary or credit. The DOT says a cancellation can qualify regardless of the reason. A fully refundable fare that goes unused is also refundable. These protections concern qualifying airline tickets, not other Expedia products. See the DOT’s refund guidance.

When does a schedule change count as significant?
The DOT’s current consumer guidance lists an early departure of at least 3 hours for a domestic itinerary or at least 6 hours for an international itinerary among its significant-change examples. It also covers certain changes involving accessibility-related airports or aircraft. The rule’s definitions and the details of the itinerary matter; do not treat every schedule adjustment as automatically qualifying.
How to make the request
- Open the Expedia booking and review the airline’s cancellation or schedule-change notice.
- If you do not want the offered alternative, clearly tell Expedia that you do not accept a credit, voucher, or replacement itinerary and are requesting a refund to the original form of payment.
- Keep the itinerary, airline notice, request confirmation, and any case number. Watch for further notifications and follow up through Expedia if the refund is not processed.
The DOT’s consumer guidance says to request a refund through the ticket agent when the ticket was bought through an agent. If Expedia does not resolve an eligible claim, retain written correspondence and consider the applicable official complaint route or payment-provider process. The appropriate next step depends on the booking and circumstances.

Does Expedia have a 24-hour free-cancellation rule for flights?
Do not assume so. The DOT’s 24-hour hold-or-refund requirement applies to airline reservations made at least seven days before departure: the airline must offer either a full refund for cancellation within 24 hours or a 24-hour hold option. The DOT explicitly says this requirement does not apply to purchases made through online travel agencies or other agents. A separate Expedia or supplier policy may apply to an individual itinerary, so check the terms shown when booking and in the confirmation. The DOT explains the scope in its refund guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How long does an Expedia refund take?
There is no single Expedia-wide processing deadline established for all flights, hotels, vacation rentals, cars, cruises, and packages. For qualifying airline refunds under the DOT’s current consumer guidance, the stated time is 7 business days for payment by credit card and 20 business days for payment in cash. These are regulatory flight-refund timelines, not a promise about every Expedia booking or every refund request.

The DOT’s 2024 final-rule summary describes ticket-agent deadlines as 7 business days for credit-card payments and 20 calendar days for other forms of payment. Because the official summaries phrase the non-card deadline differently, use the current consumer guidance for the qualifying flight case rather than treating either figure as a universal Expedia timeline.

What to check when a refund is delayed or denied
- Confirm whether the booking was canceled, whether the cancellation was initiated by you or the supplier, and whether the request was approved.
- Recheck the reservation’s terms and any airline or property notice; a refund right for one booking type does not establish eligibility for another.
- Check the original payment account and the refund status shown in the Expedia reservation. Keep all written correspondence and confirmation numbers.
- If you believe a qualifying U.S. flight refund has not been provided, contact Expedia with the booking details and the airline’s cancellation or change notice. If the matter remains unresolved, consider the relevant official complaint or payment-provider route for your circumstances.
