You can sell Alibaba-sourced products through a Shopify store by finding a supplier willing to fulfill individual orders, checking the product and terms, connecting an import-and-order-sync app, and managing fulfillment and customer obligations. Shopify’s September 2026 guide describes this workflow using the Alibaba & AliExpress Dropship app. The setup can streamline product and order handling, but it does not guarantee product quality, on-time delivery, profit, or legal compliance.
How Alibaba-to-Shopify dropshipping works
Alibaba.com is a marketplace where you find and communicate with suppliers; Shopify is the storefront where customers browse and place orders. In a dropshipping arrangement, the supplier ships an order to your customer rather than sending stock to you first. You still operate the store: you choose what to sell, set the customer-facing price and policies, monitor orders, and handle support, returns, and refunds.
Shopify’s September 2026 guide describes using the Alibaba & AliExpress Dropship app to import product information and synchronize store orders. App availability, permissions, features, and any plan conditions can change, so confirm the current app listing and terms before connecting it.
1. Find a product and a supplier willing to dropship
Search Alibaba’s dropshipping portal or supplier listings, then confirm directly that the supplier will fulfill single-customer orders. A supplier that sells wholesale quantities may not offer the order handling, packaging, or shipping your store needs.

Assess suppliers against the same practical criteria rather than choosing by listing price alone:
- Whether they accept individual orders and how they process them.
- Product specifications, available variations, customization, and packaging.
- Stock reliability and the supplier’s process for notifying you about changes.
- Shipping origin, destination-specific delivery estimates, cost, and tracking.
- How they handle defects, returns, and order problems.
- Communication quality and whether the proposed transaction can qualify for the Trade Assurance terms you want.
Review supplier details, ask questions, and keep transaction discussions in Alibaba’s Message Center, as Alibaba Buyer Central recommends. Written answers are easier to refer to if the final product or shipment differs from what you agreed.
2. Check the product and agree on terms before listing it
Ask for a sample so you can assess the product yourself, and compare it with the listing’s specifications. Shopify also advises ordering products to evaluate quality and shipping time. A sample is evidence about that sample—not a guarantee that every later unit will match—so make the requirements clear in the purchase order or transaction terms.

Before you publish a product, agree in writing on the details that affect what the customer receives:

- Packaging or customization requirements, including whether supplier branding will appear.
- Order processing expectations, shipping method, origin, destination, and tracking.
- How the supplier will address defective, missing, or incorrectly described items.
Alibaba Buyer Central recommends detailed purchase orders and samples; it also describes inspection services as a way to reduce sourcing uncertainty. Keep the agreed specifications and shipping commitments with the order record.
3. Understand what Trade Assurance does—and does not—cover
For an eligible transaction, Alibaba says Trade Assurance holds payment in escrow and releases it after the buyer receives and confirms the product. It also says it can assist with qualifying order issues, including refunds or compensation where applicable. Coverage depends on the transaction and service terms; it is not a blanket guarantee against every supplier failure, loss, or disagreement.

To seek the protection described for a qualifying order, place and pay for it through Alibaba.com and document the product and shipment requirements. Alibaba Buyer Central notes an exception for wire transfers in its payment guidance, so check the current terms for your payment method and order. Review the applicable Alibaba Trade Assurance conditions before relying on coverage.
4. Connect Alibaba to Shopify and import the listing
- Open Shopify’s app marketplace. Find the Alibaba & AliExpress Dropship app identified in Shopify’s guide, then check its current listing, permissions, compatibility, and any plan conditions.
- Install and connect the app. Follow the app’s current setup flow to authorize the connection to your Shopify store. The exact screens and labels may change.
- Add products to the import list. Use the app’s product-selection workflow to choose products from suppliers you have assessed. Treat imported information as a draft, not finished storefront copy.
- Customize each product before publishing. Check the title, description, images, variants, price, and shipping information for accuracy. Remove unsupported claims and ensure the listing matches the product and terms you agreed with the supplier.
- Confirm order synchronization. Understand how the app transfers new store orders and where you can see fulfillment and tracking status. Monitor the first orders closely so you can spot connection or process issues.
Shopify’s guide describes managing products in an import list, editing product details, and synchronizing store orders. Verify the current app workflow rather than assuming that every setting or capability remains unchanged.
5. Set a price that accounts for the full operation
Do not set your retail price by applying a markup only to the supplier’s product price. Estimate the cost of fulfilling and supporting an order, including:

- Supplier price and shipping to the customer.
- Payment transaction charges and any platform or app costs that apply to your setup.
- Advertising and customer acquisition.
- Expected refunds, replacements, defects, and customer-service costs.
- Applicable duties, taxes, and other import or cross-border costs.
Use your actual supplier quote, destination, store configuration, and likely operating costs to calculate whether a price is workable. There is no universal profit margin or success rate established for Alibaba-to-Shopify dropshipping; profitability depends on your specific costs, sales, and returns.

Before accepting orders, explain realistic processing and delivery times, the shipping origin where relevant, and whether customers may owe customs or import charges. Avoid promising a delivery date the supplier has not supported. If fulfillment is delayed or the shipping arrangement changes, update affected customers rather than leaving them to discover the problem after ordering.
Keep an accurate, publicly accessible refund policy and make sure your store’s disclosures match how orders will actually be fulfilled. Shopify’s guidance says merchants remain responsible for customer-facing shipping and potential customs/import-charge information, as well as their refund policy.

7. Monitor orders and handle customer problems
After a customer orders, check that the order reaches the fulfillment workflow, confirm the supplier has the correct product and destination details, and track fulfillment status. Follow up on missing tracking or unusual delays. The store owner remains the customer’s point of responsibility even when a supplier ships the parcel.
Have a plan for common problems: a supplier runs out of stock, a parcel is delayed, tracking stops updating, or the item arrives damaged or unlike the listing. Contact the supplier with the order evidence and agreed terms, keep the customer informed, and apply your published refund or replacement policy.
Product safety, tax, and legal responsibilities
Shopify states: “If you’re dropshipping products, then it’s your responsibility to make sure that you’re offering products for sale that are safe.” Check product-safety rules, recalls, required licenses or certifications, warnings, and instructions for the places where you sell. Requirements depend on the product and jurisdiction; a supplier listing is not proof that a product complies with the rules in your market. See Shopify’s dropshipping legal guidance.
Tax, customs, consumer rights, and product-compliance duties vary by the supplier’s origin, the customer’s destination, and your own location. For example, Shopify notes that sales from suppliers outside the EU to EU customers may involve IOSS and VAT obligations. That is a scenario to check for the particular business and current rules, not a universal rule for every store. Confirm obligations for each target market before selling.
