GameStop’s Nintendo Switch 2 launch event was scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. local time on June 4, 2025, with console pickups starting at midnight Eastern time (9 p.m. Pacific). The event has passed; GameStop’s announcement said extra consoles would be sold in stores and online only while supplies lasted, not that every customer could get one.

What time was GameStop’s Switch 2 midnight launch?

GameStop announced that its in-store launch event would start at 3 p.m. local time on Wednesday, June 4, 2025. It said pickups would begin at 12 a.m. Eastern time, which was 9 p.m. Pacific time on June 4. Nintendo’s official release date for the system was June 5, 2025, so the pickup time fell on launch day in the Eastern time zone and the preceding evening in the Pacific time zone.

The schedule comes from GameStop’s announcement, reproduced in a Nintendo Life report published May 17, 2025. Nintendo confirmed the release date in its May 2025 investor report.

Did GameStop have extra Switch 2 consoles at launch?

Yes. GameStop said additional Nintendo Switch 2 units would be available both in stores and online at launch, “while supplies last.” That meant there was a possibility of buying a console without a preorder, but the announcement did not guarantee stock for any particular shopper or location.

GameStop’s statement, as reproduced by Nintendo Life, read: “Didn’t pre-order Switch 2? Additional Switch 2 units will be available in-store and online at launch while supplies last. Launch event begins in-store at 3pm local time on June 4th. Switch 2 pickups start at 12am EST / 9pm PST.”

What the announcement did—and did not—promise

Launch detail What GameStop announced
In-store event Scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. local time on June 4, 2025.
Pickup start Scheduled for 12 a.m. Eastern / 9 p.m. Pacific.
Sales channels Additional units announced for stores and online.
Inventory Available only while supplies lasted; no store-by-store quantities were stated.
Queues and participation The announcement did not specify uniform queue rules or which locations would participate.

Because GameStop did not publish consistent store-level quantities or queue procedures in this announcement, it cannot establish how many consoles a particular store had or whether a walk-in customer would have been able to buy one. Individual location practices may have varied, but the announcement itself does not document those variations.

Historical launch prices and product context

At the U.S. launch on June 5, 2025, the Associated Press reported a launch-era price of $450 for the base console and $500 for a bundle with Mario Kart World. Those figures describe launch pricing, not current prices. The AP’s launch-day report also noted the system had reached stores that day.

Nintendo’s May 2025 investor report described the Switch 2 as having a larger, more responsive screen, magnetic Joy-Con controllers, improved processing speed and graphics performance, and compatibility with games from the original Switch library. It listed Mario Kart World and Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour among the software planned for the hardware launch.
