The new Netflix comedy starring Cheers actor Ted Danson is A Man on the Inside, created by Michael Schur. Its No. 1 claim is specific: Netflix said the series debuted at the top of its English TV List for the week of November 18, 2024, with 6.9 million views. That does not mean it ranked first across every Netflix category or chart worldwide.
What is A Man on the Inside about?
Netflix describes the series as a comedy about Charles, a retired professor recruited by a private investigator to go undercover and crack a case. Netflix also classifies it as a sitcom and crime TV title. Its listed stars include Ted Danson, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, and Lilah Richcreek Estrada; Michael Schur is its creator. Netflix’s official series page lists two seasons.

What does its No. 1 ranking mean?
In an announcement dated November 26, 2024, Netflix’s editorial team reported that A Man on the Inside “debuted atop the English TV List with 6.9M views” for the week of November 18. The ranking refers to that weekly English-language television list—not all Netflix titles, all categories, or an unrestricted global chart. Netflix’s weekly chart announcement is the source for the debut position and view count.
How did its weekly Netflix ranking change?
Netflix’s subsequent weekly reports placed the series at No. 3 with 7 million views for the week of November 25, then No. 7 with 3 million views in its December 10 report and No. 8 with 1.9 million views in its December 17 report. Each entry is a separate weekly snapshot, so later positions do not change what its debut-week ranking was.

How did it perform over 2024?
Nielsen’s 2025 analysis of viewing during 2024 ranked A Man on the Inside second among new original comedy series, with 2.94 billion viewing minutes. Nielsen also reported that 62% of the show’s audience was age 50 or older. Those annual viewing-minute figures are Nielsen’s measure; they are not directly comparable with Netflix’s weekly view counts.

A November 2024 TIME interview says the series draws inspiration from The Mole Agent, a 2020 documentary set in a Chilean retirement home. That supports describing the documentary as an inspiration, not calling the Netflix series a documentary adaptation.
