The CDC says, “Never use a portable gas camp stove indoors.” For a kitchen, choose a propane appliance explicitly designed and rated for indoor cooking, then verify its fuel, venting, installation instructions, certification and local requirements. A carbon monoxide alarm is an important backup, not a way to make an outdoor-only stove safe inside.
Can you use a propane camping stove indoors?
No. The CDC’s Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Basics says, “Never use a portable gas camp stove indoors.” Coleman likewise labels its PowerPack propane stove and Triton+ two-burner camping stove for outdoor use; Coleman identifies carbon monoxide and fire risks for the Triton+.
Do not treat an open window, brief use, or a carbon monoxide alarm as permission to use an outdoor-only stove indoors. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says unvented combustion appliances, including camp stoves, should not be used indoors. Propane is a fuel, not a guarantee of indoor suitability: the appliance’s design, instructions and installation determine where it belongs.
How is an indoor propane range different from a camp stove?
A permanent kitchen range is designed for indoor cooking and must be installed and operated as its manufacturer specifies. That includes using the correct fuel, providing the required venting and meeting applicable installation and local requirements. A portable camp stove is made for outdoor cooking; its being propane-powered or having a flame does not make it suitable for a kitchen.

The EPA’s outage guidance is narrow: a vented fuel-burning stove may be used for cooking during a power outage if its vent does not rely on electricity. This is not approval to use an unvented camp stove indoors. Check the exact appliance manual to understand whether its venting requires power and what to do during an outage.
How to choose an indoor propane stove
No particular indoor propane range model is verified here, so a product ranking or performance endorsement would be premature. Before buying or installing a range, confirm each of these details in the exact model’s current official product information and manual:

- Indoor-use design and certification: Confirm the appliance is specified for indoor cooking and that its certification applies to your location and installation.
- Propane compatibility: Verify that the exact model is configured for propane. If conversion is needed, check whether the manufacturer permits it and what the instructions require; do not assume a natural-gas model is ready for propane.
- Venting: Identify the required exhaust or venting arrangement and whether it depends on electrical power. Follow the manufacturer’s requirements rather than substituting a window or improvised ventilation.
- Cooking configuration: Compare burner and oven arrangements with your household’s cooking needs, using verified specifications for the model.
- Installation and local rules: Check required clearances, installation conditions and applicable local requirements before purchase. Requirements can vary by jurisdiction.
- Ownership support: Check service access, warranty terms and parts availability for the exact model.
What carbon monoxide protection can—and cannot—do
Carbon monoxide alarms add a warning layer; they do not replace selecting the right appliance, installing it correctly, following its instructions or maintaining it. The Propane Education & Research Council advises using CO detectors and following appliance directions. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends installing an alarm that meets current UL 2034 requirements on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas; battery-powered or battery-backup alarms are recommended.
Keep the distinction clear: an alarm can alert occupants to a danger, but it cannot make a portable camp stove safe for indoor use.

Using a propane appliance during a power outage
Use the outage guidance only for an indoor, vented fuel-burning stove that is approved for the cooking use in question. The EPA says it may be used for cooking during an outage if the vent does not need power. If the appliance’s vent depends on electricity, that condition is not met. Never substitute a portable or unvented camp stove indoors.
