10 Biggest Box-Office Bombs of the Last 25 Years: What the Estimates Show

Reported estimates put several post-2001 films among major box-office flops, but overlapping ranges and differing methods prevent a reliable one-to-ten ranking.

There is no audited, universally accepted list of the ten biggest box-office bombs released since 2001. The figures below are reported estimates of inflation-adjusted losses, not confirmed studio write-offs. Because the available estimates use different methods and several ranges overlap, they support a comparison of major reported flops—not a reliable one-through-ten ranking.

How to read a box-office loss estimate

A film’s worldwide box-office gross is not the amount its studio keeps. Theaters retain a share of ticket sales, while a film’s costs can include production, marketing, distribution and other expenses. Studios also earn revenue through later channels, and public estimates may treat those costs and receipts differently. A production budget minus worldwide gross is therefore not a dependable measure of a studio’s profit or loss.

Filmsite’s chart provides a consistent set of inflation-adjusted estimates for several films, but describes its figures as approximate and says listed production budgets exclude marketing and additional production costs. The figures below are presented as that chart reports them, adjusted through 2025; they are not audited accounts. The chart does not establish a complete, comparable top ten for films released from 2001 onward.

Major reported losses, compared

These four films are prominent examples in Filmsite’s chart. They are grouped by the reported ranges and estimates, not assigned a definitive rank: overlapping ranges and differing estimation methods make precise ordering unwarranted.

Film Release year Reported nominal estimated loss Inflation-adjusted estimated loss Source and qualification
John Carter 2012 $112–200 million $153–274 million Filmsite, undated chart reviewed in 2026; adjusted through 2025. The chart lists an approximately $263.7 million production budget and $284.1 million worldwide gross.
The Lone Ranger 2013 $160–190 million $216–256 million Filmsite, undated chart reviewed in 2026; adjusted through 2025.
Mortal Engines 2018 $174.8 million Approximately $219 million Filmsite, undated chart reviewed in 2026; adjusted through 2025.
The Marvels 2023 $199–237 million $205–245 million Filmsite, undated chart reviewed in 2026; adjusted through 2025.

Filmsite’s box-office flop chart is the source for the estimates in this table. The wide ranges matter: John Carter’s adjusted range overlaps with the other estimates, and the adjusted ranges for The Lone Ranger and The Marvels overlap as well. A single number or strict rank would hide that uncertainty.

Why no defensible rank from one to ten?

The available sources do not establish a consistently measured, inflation-adjusted top ten for every film released from 2001 through the present. They differ in which losses they include and how they estimate them; some report ranges, and those ranges can overlap. In that situation, naming a precise tenth-place film—or ordering close estimates as if they were settled facts—would imply more certainty than the evidence supports.

The Week’s 2026 list offers another useful example, but it applies an additional editorial filter: it selects films with Rotten Tomatoes scores below 30% from a pool of estimated losses. It cites The Adventures of Pluto Nash (2002) at an adjusted estimated loss of $168 million and Mortal Engines at $219 million. Those are The Week’s figures, not an unfiltered financial ranking; the Rotten Tomatoes criterion means its selection cannot establish the ten biggest losses by money alone. Read The Week’s 2026 selection.

What inflation adjustment changes

A nominal estimate states dollars associated with the original reporting, while an inflation-adjusted estimate converts that amount to a later dollar basis so films from different years can be compared more meaningfully. Filmsite labels its adjusted estimates approximately and adjusts through 2025. Its nominal and adjusted figures should not be mixed in a ranking: doing so would favor older films in some comparisons and newer films in others.

Even when figures are adjusted to the same year, the result remains an estimate built from underlying assumptions. Inflation adjustment does not make a loss figure audited or make different publishers’ accounting methods equivalent.

Why theatrical grosses can miss part of the picture

For pandemic-era releases in particular, a theatrical gross may capture only part of a film’s commercial performance. Some titles moved quickly to streaming, and streaming results are often not disclosed in a comparable public form. A theatrical-only comparison can therefore leave out revenue that would affect a fuller profitability estimate. The same general caution applies to other later or ancillary revenue channels.

That limitation does not prove a film was profitable, nor does a weak theatrical gross by itself establish the size of a studio’s loss. It means public box-office figures are one input—not a complete studio ledger. Box Office Mojo tracks theatrical grosses, but a gross total should not be mistaken for a profit statement.

What the estimates can—and cannot—tell you

  • They can identify films associated with very large reported losses. The four Filmsite examples show adjusted estimates from approximately $205 million to $274 million at the top of their reported ranges.
  • They cannot establish exact studio losses. Public estimates are not audited studio accounts and may differ in which costs and revenue streams they include.
  • They cannot support a definitive top ten here. The source figures and selection rules are not sufficiently consistent, and some reported ranges overlap.
  • A gross larger than a production budget does not settle profitability. The theater share and costs beyond production help explain why a film can gross more worldwide than its stated production budget and still be reported as a loss.
