A broken oven at George Weston Foods’ Tip Top bakery in Canning Vale disrupted bread deliveries to some Perth supermarkets in July 2022. At least a dozen stores reportedly received little or no stock of popular Tip Top products, but the reports did not say every Perth supermarket ran out. The company said the bakery was back to normal on Tuesday.
What happened at the Canning Vale bakery?
PerthNow reported on 13 July 2022 that George Weston Foods confirmed a “breakdown” at its Canning Vale bakery. The report, attributing the detail to The West Australian, said one oven had broken down the previous week. At least a dozen stores reportedly received little or no stock of popular Tip Top bread goods. PerthNow’s report
The company spokeswoman said the bakery was “back to normal” on Tuesday. That update described the bakery’s operating status; it did not specify when every affected shop would have been restocked.
Which Perth stores and products were affected?
The 2022 account described shortages at particular retailers and locations, rather than a citywide lack of bread:

- Coles stores in Karawara and Cannington had empty Tip Top shelves.
- A Woolworths in Cannington displayed a similar supply notice.
- IGA stores in East Perth, Balga, Bull Creek, East Victoria Park and Beckenham reportedly had reduced Tip Top supply.
- Buttercup Country Split, also understood to be made at the bakery, was reportedly low at several IGA stores.

How is this different from the 2025 fire?
The oven breakdown was a 2022 incident. In October 2025, a separate fire at the same Canning Vale facility reduced production and contributed to sliced-bread shortages across Western Australia. Tip Top said bread was being transported into WA from South Australia during that disruption. The fire was not the cause of the 2022 shortage. ABC News’ report on the 2025 fire

What changed at the bakery by 2026?
Associated British Foods’ material based on its 2024 annual report described a planned upgrade expected to increase Canning Vale’s capacity from 44 million to 56 million loaves a year. It said the new line was planned to produce 8,350 loaves per hour. Those were upgrade plans, not figures for the 2022 breakdown. Associated British Foods on the planned Tip Top capacity upgrade
