When did eBay stop accepting American Express?
eBay announced the decision on June 5, 2024, and set August 17, 2024, as the global end date for Amex acceptance. Its current buyer payment guidance says American Express is not accepted.
Why did eBay drop Amex?
eBay said the companies could not agree on terms acceptable to eBay because of Amex’s processing fees. In its June 5, 2024 announcement, eBay described those fees as “unacceptably high.” It also argued that processing costs should be falling as technology, fraud prevention and customer protections improve, while fees continued to rise. Those are eBay’s stated reasons, not independently verified details of its contract.
Amex disputed eBay’s characterization. In contemporaneous reporting, the company said eBay’s cost to accept Amex was comparable to what it paid for similar cards on other networks. Amex also said the average transaction by its cardmembers at eBay was more than double the average for cards from other networks. These are Amex’s claims; public sources do not independently confirm the confidential fee terms or transaction comparison. The Associated Press quoted an Amex spokesperson saying the decision was “inconsistent with their stated desire to increase competition at the point of sale.”

What the public figures do—and do not—show
The reported estimates of eBay’s share of Amex network volume differ. The Associated Press reported that Keefe, Bruyette & Woods analysts estimated eBay represented roughly 0.5% of Amex’s worldwide network volume. Payments Dive reported Amex’s own statement that eBay accounted for less than 0.2% of total network volume. These are separate, attributed figures, not a single settled estimate.
The available sources do not establish eBay’s contracted Amex processing-fee rate or how much eBay expected to save by ending acceptance. The Associated Press noted that merchant fees vary by industry and that rates negotiated by large merchants are typically closely guarded. General card-fee averages should not be mistaken for eBay’s rate.

What can you use instead of Amex on eBay?
eBay says most categories accept credit cards, debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Venmo, Klarna and PayPal. Not every method is available for every item or category, so the listing and the checkout screen for your purchase are the practical guide. Check the current eBay payment guidance as well as the options presented at checkout.
If Amex is your only saved payment method, choose another option displayed for the item or contact your card issuer about another card option. Do not assume a wallet will work as a way to pass an Amex card through: eBay’s published list of payment services does not guarantee every underlying-card arrangement.

Are eBay gift cards a workaround?
No—eBay gift cards are not a reliable workaround for using Amex at checkout. eBay says availability of its physical and digital gift cards began phasing out on August 3, 2026; as of September 24, 2026, digital eBay gift cards could no longer be purchased. Existing balances remain usable, according to eBay’s gift-card guidance.
