October reports described customer notices about a Green Dot Bank rule that takes effect November 9, 2026: under the terms, unverified accounts will be restricted from loading Apple Cash with a supported payment card in the stated circumstances. Apple may also ask users to verify for other features, and it can request verification again even if they passed a check before.
What changes on November 9, 2026?
MacRumors reported on October 5, 2026, citing customer emails, that Green Dot Bank would require identity verification to reload Apple Cash. Green Dot’s Apple Cash Terms and Conditions set November 9, 2026, as the effective date for the reload restriction on unverified accounts, subject to the conditions in the terms. The October date refers to when notice of the change was reported, not when the new rule takes effect.

The reload change is separate from an existing threshold: Green Dot’s terms describe a $500 threshold for certain sending and receiving activity by users whose identity has not been verified. MacRumors also reported that verification is already required when adding, sending, or receiving more than $500 total. Check the terms for the conditions that apply to your account rather than treating the threshold as a universal allowance.
How to verify your identity
- On your iPhone, open Settings.
- Tap Wallet & Apple Pay, then tap your Apple Cash card.
- Scroll to Verify Identity and follow the on-screen instructions. In iOS 27, if you have a driver’s license stored in Wallet, you may see Continue with ID in Wallet.
Apple’s identity-verification instructions say that if Verify Identity does not appear, your identity has already been verified. A previous successful check does not guarantee that no further check will be requested; Apple says verification may be requested again.

What information might Apple Cash request?
Verification may ask for your name, address, date of birth, and Social Security number. If more information is needed, you may also be asked to provide a copy of a government ID. A photo of an ID is not described as a universal requirement.
Apple’s Apple Cash privacy notice says information provided for verification goes to the bank and its identity-verification service provider for verification and compliance. It says the information is used for fraud prevention and compliance with U.S. financial regulations.

What you can do if you do not verify
Apple says an account that cannot be verified may lose access to some Apple Cash features. Its support page describes the following outcomes:

These points concern identity verification. They do not establish what will happen to an account that is locked or restricted for a separate reason; consult Apple Support and Green Dot’s terms for your account’s status.

Who can use Apple Cash?
Apple Cash is a Green Dot Bank service. Apple says it is available in the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Sending and receiving money requires a person to be at least 18 and a U.S. resident. A family organizer can set up Apple Cash Family for someone under 18, though some features may be unavailable. Availability and account rules can change, so check Apple’s support page and the terms for current details.
