Amazon’s September 2024 announcement set a five-day office expectation for corporate employees, effective January 2, 2025, while allowing exceptions for extenuating circumstances and previously approved remote arrangements. CEO Andy Jassy argued that in-person work supports invention, collaboration, connection, and company culture. Those are Amazon’s reasons for the change, not proof that five office days produce better results for every team or task.
What did Amazon announce?
On September 16, 2024, Jassy said Amazon would return to office expectations “the way we were before the onset of COVID.” The company set January 2, 2025, as the effective date. The announcement concerned corporate employees; it should not be read as a policy for all Amazon workers, including warehouse and field employees. This was a change in guidance, not a uniform policy maintained throughout the pandemic. Amazon’s 2021 update recounted earlier target dates for returning, a proposed minimum of three office days a week, and a period in which director-level leaders would decide what worked for their teams. It also described fully remote, fully in-office, and hybrid arrangements.
Why did Amazon say five days in the office would help?
Jassy’s case was that more face-to-face time would help employees invent, collaborate, connect with one another, and sustain the company’s culture. The reasoning is especially relevant to work that depends on rapid discussion, shared problem-solving, or building relationships across a team. But a leadership rationale is not the same as evidence that a five-day schedule outperforms hybrid work for every role. The public material cited here does not establish a controlled comparison of outcomes under five-day, hybrid, and remote arrangements.
When did Amazon’s five-day expectation start?
Amazon announced the change on September 16, 2024, and said it would take effect January 2, 2025. That timing followed Jassy’s February 2023 announcement of a three-day in-office expectation. The available announcement establishes the intended start date, but not how the policy has been enforced in every team since then.

What are the trade-offs of working in the office every day?
The practical balance depends on the work and the employee. In-person time may make spontaneous exchanges and live problem-solving easier; quiet individual tasks may call for uninterrupted focus. A daily commute and changes to personal arrangements are costs employees may need to weigh against the value of being together. Amazon acknowledged that some employees would need to adjust personal arrangements, but did not quantify those costs or explain how exceptions would be applied across teams.
- For collaborative work: Ask whether frequent discussion, coordination, or shared decisions are central to the role.
- For focused work: Consider how often interruptions help the task versus break concentration.
- For personal finances: Account for commuting and any other routine expenses that change when office attendance increases; the announcement does not quantify these costs.
- For flexibility: Check whether an approved remote exception or an extenuating circumstance applies rather than assuming every employee has the same arrangement.
- For results: Distinguish a company’s stated rationale from measured effects on productivity, retention, or collaboration.
Does being in the office actually improve collaboration?
Jassy and Amazon say more in-person work can improve connection and help teams resolve complex trade-offs. That is a plausible organizational argument, but the cited announcements do not demonstrate that five days in the office improve collaboration or productivity across all teams compared with hybrid work. The AP also noted that Amazon had not disclosed how many of its worldwide employees worked in offices rather than warehouses or other sites. That absence of a workforce-location breakdown is not evidence for or against the policy’s effectiveness.

Jassy said employees could work remotely in extenuating circumstances or if they already had an approved remote-work exception. Amazon’s announcement did not quantify how many exceptions existed or provide a full account of how they would be assessed across teams. Employees should therefore treat the stated exceptions as part of the announcement, not assume that they guarantee approval in any particular situation.

Was the manager-ratio target part of the office policy?
No. In the same September 2024 communication, Amazon separately set a target for S-team organizations to increase the ratio of individual contributors to managers by at least 15% by the end of Q1 2025.
