Automotive marketing is becoming more personal, more focused on electrification and more tied to connected vehicle features. The strongest approach is not to sell novelty for its own sake: it is to show how a product or service fits a customer’s needs, costs and daily routine, while explaining sustainability claims and data use clearly. For consumers, that means looking past tailored messages to the vehicle’s quality, performance, price and practical ownership requirements.
What is changing in automotive marketing?
Automakers are increasingly treating marketing, sales and service as connected parts of one customer experience. A shopper may encounter a vehicle online, discuss options with a dealer, then receive service reminders or connected-feature offers after purchase. Personalization can make those interactions more relevant, but connected vehicles also raise questions about what information is collected, why it is used and whether the customer understands the arrangement.
The scale of the shift is reflected in Deloitte’s 2026 Global Automotive Consumer Study, based on responses from more than 28,500 consumers in 27 countries surveyed in October and November 2025. Its topics include electric vehicle interest, brand perceptions, connected technology and software-driven vehicles. Deloitte’s summary says product quality, vehicle performance and price lead brand choice across markets; advertising, brand affiliations and easy financing are less influential in that summary. These are cross-market study findings, not a universal ranking for every buyer or vehicle segment. Deloitte’s 2026 Global Automotive Consumer Study
For personal-finance decisions, the implication is straightforward: a well-targeted offer may help a buyer find a relevant model or service, but it does not replace comparing the underlying vehicle, total cost and suitability.

How personalization can help—and where it can go wrong
Useful personalization reduces the effort involved in finding information that matters to a particular customer. A family comparing vehicle space, a commuter weighing fuel costs, or an owner approaching a service interval may need different information. Personalization is less useful when it simply increases message volume, obscures the price or makes a customer feel that private vehicle data is being used unexpectedly.
Blue Yonder’s survey, fielded in September 2024 among more than 4,000 consumers in the United States, United Kingdom, France and Germany, illustrates the tension between customization and value. One quarter of respondents said sustainability and EV options were a primary purchase factor, but 86% said they would compromise on personalization to lower vehicle cost amid high interest rates; 80% said they would compromise for faster delivery. The survey also found that 85% considered a one-to-six-month delivery wait acceptable. These results describe respondents in those four markets at that time, not current preferences everywhere. For buyers, this is a reminder to weigh convenience against the cost and terms of an offer. A personalized finance or service proposal should make the full price, duration, fees and conditions easy to compare. Tailored content is not evidence that a vehicle or add-on is the best value.
Why privacy is part of the customer experience
Connected vehicles can generate data that supports functions such as navigation, diagnostics and remote services. The fact that data exists does not mean it is automatically appropriate for marketing use. Customers need understandable information about what is collected, how it is used and what choices they have.

KPMG’s 2024 report says 98% of surveyed original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) had structured programs, frameworks and defined roles for managing sensitive customer vehicle data, and 86% reported significantly or moderately increased privacy-program budgets. Those are findings about OEM respondents and their programs, not proof that every practice is effective or that consumers trust automakers. The report also cites Pew Research Center’s 2023 finding that 81% of US adults were concerned and confused about how their data was being used; that figure is not an automotive-specific survey. KPMG recommends privacy by design and default, ethical data policies and secure technology as ways to build trust and meet regulatory expectations. For a consumer, the practical test is whether the automaker explains data practices plainly and provides meaningful choices—not simply whether it describes its system as personalized or connected.
How sustainability and electrification shape the message
Marketing around electric vehicles needs to acknowledge that consumers weigh more than emissions or a vehicle’s electric range. Purchase price, charging access and everyday practicality affect whether a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) fits a buyer’s circumstances. Deloitte’s 2026 study characterizes BEV demand as steady but cautious and says hybrid appeal is strengthening as consumers balance affordability, charging access and practicality. That points to a market-sensitive message, not an assumption that every buyer is ready to switch to a BEV. Deloitte’s 2026 Global Automotive Consumer Study

Survey results also vary by country. In Blue Yonder’s September 2024 survey, the share who identified sustainability and EV options as a primary purchase factor was 19% in the United States, 29% in the United Kingdom, 26% in Germany and 28% in France. The figures are from that company-sponsored survey of those four markets; they are not a current global estimate. Blue Yonder’s survey infographic
For a buyer comparing options, an EV or hybrid pitch is most useful when it addresses the actual ownership questions: purchase and financing cost, access to charging, expected use and how the vehicle fits daily travel. For sustainability claims about vehicle-level fuel economy, emissions or manufacturer performance against greenhouse-gas standards, the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Automotive Trends Report is an official reference. Its page includes the 2025 report, published in February 2026; the page is a source for checking such claims, not a substitute for comparing the particular vehicle and market at issue. Connected services, software-enabled features and over-the-air updates give automakers new ways to describe a vehicle’s capabilities after it leaves the showroom. Deloitte’s 2026 study includes consumer questions on willingness to pay for connected services, data sharing, software-defined vehicles, software-enabled features and over-the-air updates. The study summary establishes that these subjects are being examined; it does not establish that every consumer values every feature or is willing to pay for it.
That distinction matters when evaluating an advertised feature. A marketer should explain what the feature does for the customer, whether it depends on a subscription or data sharing, and what the customer will pay. A buyer should distinguish included equipment from optional services and check the terms for recurring charges, availability and any data choices before treating a feature as part of the vehicle’s value.

The same campaign can be persuasive to one audience and irrelevant to another. A useful comparison asks what the approach offers, what practical friction remains, and what trust or cost questions need clear answers.
| Marketing approach | Potential customer value | What should be made clear | Key friction to account for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personalized offers and communications | More relevant vehicle, service or ownership information for a specific customer. | Why the offer is relevant, full price and terms, and how personal or vehicle data is used. | Affordability and the risk that customization adds complexity or messages without improving value. |
| Sustainability and electrification messaging | Information about vehicle attributes and options that may suit a buyer’s environmental priorities. | Specific, supportable vehicle claims and the market or model they describe. | Purchase cost, charging access and practical use; Deloitte’s 2026 study describes BEV demand as cautious and hybrid appeal as strengthening. |
| Connected and software-feature marketing | Convenience or functionality through connected services, software features or updates. | What works, what costs extra, whether a service recurs, and what data use or sharing is involved. | Whether the feature is useful to this buyer and whether its price and data terms are acceptable. |
A practical way for consumers to assess the message
- Start with the vehicle. Compare quality, performance, price and suitability for your needs before giving extra weight to a tailored advertisement or brand affiliation.
- Separate purchase price from ongoing costs. Check whether a connected feature, service or financing offer adds a recurring charge or has conditions that affect its value.
- Test the sustainability claim. Identify whether the claim concerns the vehicle’s attributes, emissions or broader sustainability, and look for a relevant, credible source rather than relying on a general green label.
- Check the practical fit. For an EV, account for charging access and everyday use alongside the purchase cost; for connected services, ask whether the feature is useful enough to justify its price.
- Read the data explanation. Before sharing connected-vehicle information or enabling a service, look for a plain-language account of what is collected, why it is used and what choices are available.
Automotive marketing is moving toward more individualized, electrified and software-connected experiences, but its effectiveness depends on relevance and credibility. For consumers, the best message is the one that helps answer a real ownership question without hiding the cost, practical tradeoffs or data implications.
