Folorunsho Alakija built her business interests over several decades, moving from office administration and banking into Nigerian fashion before expanding into oil, real estate and printing. Her connection to Famfa Oil and its reported stake in the Agbami field is the clearest link between her portfolio and the wealth attributed to her in historical coverage. Published estimates differ sharply and are dated; neither establishes her current net worth or rank.

How Alakija’s career developed

Alakija’s official biography describes early work in office administration and banking, followed by a move into Nigeria’s fashion industry. The biographical archive Blerf identifies her first fashion label as Supreme Stitches. That chronology is drawn from a secondary biographical compilation.

Her later business roles extended beyond fashion. The official biography lists her as vice chair of family oil company FAMFA Oil Limited and names positions in Dayspring Property Development and Digital Reality Print. The career arc matters: her wealth story is not simply a single oil discovery, but a portfolio that developed across different industries.

Why Famfa Oil is central to the fortune story

Famfa Oil is the strongest documented connection between Alakija’s business portfolio and the fortune discussed in historical media accounts. Forbes Africa’s December 2017/January 2018 supplement described Famfa Oil as holding a 60% participating interest in OML 127, part of the Agbami field, with Chevron and Petrobras as partners. That is a dated magazine description, not a current verification of operating status or ownership.

A company’s participating interest is not the same as an individual shareholder’s personal wealth. The supplement describes Famfa Oil’s reported project interest; it does not, by itself, establish how much of the company’s value belonged personally to Alakija, how assets and liabilities were treated, or what her wealth is today.

Why published estimates of her wealth differ

The figures often repeated in coverage refer to different publications and dates, and should not be treated as competing measurements made on the same basis.

Publication and date Figure What the source says
TIME, December 2014 At least $3.3 billion TIME attributed the estimate to Ventures Africa; it was not presented as TIME’s own calculation. TIME’s report
Forbes Africa, December 2017/January 2018 $1.4 billion The supplement cited earlier Forbes Woman Africa December 2013–January 2014 and Forbes Africa August 2016 issues. It states its net-worth evaluations were correct as of November 9, 2017. Forbes Africa supplement

Those estimates are not directly comparable: they come from different publications, at different times, with no shared verified methodology established in these reports. Private-company stakes and oil-related valuations can be sensitive to assumptions and changing market conditions, but the cited material does not explain precisely how either estimate was calculated. The sources do not establish Alakija’s current net worth or a current ranking as Africa’s richest woman.

Other business interests and philanthropy

Alakija’s official biography also describes interests in property development and technical printing. It presents the Rose of Sharon Foundation as supporting widows, families and orphans through education programs and university scholarships. Flourish Africa is described as a community for women that shares experiences and provides grants to female entrepreneurs. These are the organizations’ stated aims, not independently audited measures of impact.

Her official books page lists the autobiography Growing with the hands that gives the Rose: Autobiography. The same site mentions a “latest biography” in a book-review video but does not name the book, so its title cannot be reliably identified from that reference.
